Falcons kick off the Cochrane portion of the schedule in style
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team began the home portion of the 2018 schedule on a successful note Saturday afternoon (Aug. 25). Three different players found the back of the net as the Falcons downed Oakland University, 3-0, at Cochrane Stadium.
Junior Maureen Kennedy got the Falcons on the board in the 35th minute, converting a penalty kick after sophomore Sophia Barnes was tripped in the penalty area. Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox and redshirt senior Erica Hubert scored second-half goals for the Brown and Orange to seal the victory.
Junior Kathleen Duwve was forced to make just one save en route to the shutout. BGSU held advantages of 19-7 in total shot attempts and 9-1 in shots on goal.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Redshirt senior Erica Hubert's goal in Saturday's win was the 28th of her BGSU career. She has moved into a tie for second place on the school's career goals list. Hubert has caught Samantha Meister (28 goals from 2002-05) on that list, and she now trails only Kristy Coppes. Coppes (2001-04) had 52 goals during her Falcon career.
• WIth three points on Saturday, Hubert now has 62 career points. She ranks fifth on that BGSU list, just two points behind former Falcon teammate Skylar Fleak (64 points from 2014-17).
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 8' | Senior Erica Hubert hit a long pass into the penalty area, but the diagonal ball was just out of the reach of classmate Marissa Swindell, and Oakland goalkeeper Jaimie Leas was able to grab it.
• 9' | A Swindell pass found Hubert in the box, and Hubert made a nifty turn as she received the pass, but her shot sailed high.
• 12' | Hubert was at it again, eluding two defenders as she moved from right to left along the 18-yard line. She fired a shot, but it was just wide of the near post.
• 17' | Swindell was fouled just outside of the area, but junior Chelsee Washington's free kick was blocked by the Oakland wall.
• 18' | Junior Maureen Kennedy played a ball into the box, and redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox headed it along, but the ball was just out of the reach of Washington on the far side of the box.
• 20' | Kennedy fired a free kick, and the dipping shot was stopped by Leas on the short hop. The Oakland 'keeper gave up a rebound, but was able to pounce on the ball before any BG striker could arrive.
• 24' | Swindell came up with a steal and fired a quick shot, but Leas was able to recover and make the save after the OU turnover.
• 35' | GOAL | Sophomore Sophia Barnes was tripped as she entered the penalty area on the right side of the pitch. Kennedy took the ensuing penalty kick, and her shot was on the mark, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Each team had one shot over the final 10 minutes of the half, but neither were on frame.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 47' | Washington got a head on Kennedy's free kick, but the shot was hit directly at Leas.
• 53' | After a lengthy stretch of BGSU possession, Kennedy's diagonal ball from the left side put Washington past the Oakland back line. But, the BG junior's shot went wide left.
• 57' | Junior Kristin Tveit stole the ball on the OU side of midfield and played it ahead to senior Laura Bozzelli, who won the Falcons a corner kick. That Kennedy corner kick was met by Washington, who headed the ball off of the left goalpost.
• 61' | A long ball by senior Alexis Fricke was headed in the direction of Tveit in the box, but the Oakland 'keeper just barely beat the BG junior to the ball.
• 64' | Swindell took a pass from freshman Alexis Miller and in turn found Hubert on the right side. Hubert was challenged by a defender, who knocked the ball toward the corner. The ball, however, hit the corner flag and stayed in play. Hubert quickly changed direction to elude the defender and fired a shot from a tough angle, which forced Leas to make an acrobatic save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.
• 80' | GOAL | The Falcons doubled the lead. Off of a Kennedy corner kick, the ball found Hubert near the top of the area. Hubert's shot was blocked by a defender, and the ball squirted past that OU player to Washington. Washington quickly fired a shot that eluded Leas, but was blocked by a defender on the goal line. Cox was there for the rebound, however, blasting the ball into the vacated net to give BG a 2-0 lead with 10:27 to go.
• 85' | A Washington pass put Hubert into the box on the left side, and she hit a shot that went just wide of the far post.
• 90' | GOAL | With just 48 seconds remaining, Hubert hit a turnaround shot from distance, and the hard shot found the upper half of the net to give the Falcons a three-goal lead and cap the scoring.
