Final Statistics
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team, after losing the first set, came from behind on Saturday (Sept. 1) afternoon to beat UNLV. The Falcons fought off set points in both the third and fourth sets, eventually winning both sets to win the match by a 3-1 margin.
Bowling Green finishes the Duquesne Tournament with a 2-1 record, and with Youngstown State's win over Duquesne later on in the day, the Falcons officially finished in first place on the weekend. Additionally, Isabel Kovacic was named tournament MVP, while Kallie Seimet also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
COACH TOMIC QUOTE
"This is a great win for us for many reasons. First, we beat a very good UNLV team that has one of the toughest servers we will probably face all season long. They also have a very balanced and aggressive defense. Secondly, this is the first time this season that our team played completely as a team and showed a true BG Warrior spirit. To come from behind in sets three and four, and save two set points takes a lot of effort, grit and mental toughness. We showed all of that today. A "W" is just an outcome of the fight and spirit we showed as a ream, and for that, we are most proud."
FALCONS FIGHT OFF SET POINTS IN THE THIRD
• In any volleyball match that's tied at 1-1, the third set, often times, proves to be the difference in the match. With BGSU down 23-19, UNLV appeared to be in control.
• Macie Linne and Isabel Kovacic posted consecutive kills, and then a UNLV attack error brought BGSU back within a single point at 23-22.
• However, UNLV answered with a kill, forcing the Falcons to fight off a pair of set points. BG did just that, as a Kovacic kill and UNLV attack error tied the set, 24-24.
• Both schools then traded points, before kills from Kovacic and Marciniak gave Bowling Green the much-important 2-1 lead in the match.
SHOWING THAT FALCON FIGHT, AGAIN!
• In the fourth, Bowling Green would have to fight out of a late-set deficit yet again. UNLV led, 21-18, before BGSU totaled three-straight points.
• UNLV would get to set point for the second-straight set at 25-24. BGSU then called a timeout, and scored consecutive points off a UNLV attack error and Jacqueline Askin kill.
• Coming out of a Rebel timeout, Askin would notch the game-winning kill to give the Falcons the victory.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS FOR BGSU
• Isabelle Marciniak contributed significantly in a number of areas, posting a double-double with 26 assists and 17 digs. She also added four kills and a hit a team-best .417 hitting percentage.
• Kallie Seimet led the Falcons with 18 digs, while Isabel Kovacic added a team-high six blocks.
• Macie Linne posted a team-best 12 kills for the Orange and Brown.
• Defensively, BGSU had a number of players step up. Taylor Haberland recorded 10 digs, while Askin and Paulina Iacobelli notched eight digs apiece.
• Katie Kidwell played a big role in the match, as well, finishing with five kills and five blocks.
UP NEXT
• With no mid-week match, Bowling Green will prepare for next weekend's Cleveland State Tournament (Sept. 7-8).
• BGSU is set to play Illinois (9:30 a.m.) and UC Irvine (4:30 p.m.) on Sept. 7, prior to finishing the tournament with a 1:30 p.m. first serve against Cleveland State on Sept. 8.
