UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team begins Mid-American Conference play this weekend, hitting the road for a pair of matches. Head coach Matt Fannon and the Falcons travel to Oxford for a Friday (Sept. 21) meeting with Miami University.  Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Miami Soccer Field.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will venture to Muncie, Ind., for a Sunday (Sept. 23) matchup with Ball State University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex, and will be aired on ESPN+.
#MACTION BEGINS: FALCONS TABBED FOR THIRD
• All 12 Mid-American Conference teams begin the league portion of the schedule on Friday. The Falcons were picked to place third in the MAC race in 2018 in the preseason poll, which is the result of voting by the conference's 12 head coaches.
• The Falcons received two first-place votes in the poll, and BG's total of 114 points trailed only Kent State (134) and Sunday's opponent, Ball State (119).
• In 2017, BGSU was picked to finish sixth (i.e., last) in the MAC's East Division in the preseason poll, but the Falcons proceeded to finish second in the East before advancing all the way to the championship match of the MAC Tournament.
• After eight years of two six-team divisions, the MAC has eliminated divisions for the sport of women's soccer beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
• The complete 2018 MAC Preseason Poll results can be found on page 5 of the PDF version of these notes.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a record of 2-3-2, and BGSU takes a two-match unbeaten streak into Friday's Miami matchup. The Brown and Orange battled DePaul to a 1-1 draw on Thursday (Sept. 13) at Cochrane Stadium. Senior Erica Hubert scored the Falcons' goal after receiving a through ball from junior Chelsee Washington, while junior Kathleen Duwve made 13 saves, including several of the spectacular variety.
• Three days later, Hubert and Washington each had five points as the Falcons rolled to a 6-0 win over Youngstown State on Senior Day at Cochrane. Junior Maureen Kennedy had two assists in the victory, while a total of 27 players, including three goalkeepers, saw action against the Penguins.
• The Falcons are 2-1-1 at home, 0-2 on the road and 0-0-1 in neutral-site matches this season to date. BGSU has outscored opponents, 11-6.
• After playing a pair of overtime matches in Hawai'i to open the campaign, BGSU topped Oakland, 3-0, in the home opener. Then, the team's scheduled match at Valparaiso (Aug. 31) was halted late in the first half due to lightning and was ultimately cancelled, and the Falcons then dropped matches against Xavier and No. 15 Northwestern.
• After her seven-point week vs. DePaul and YSU, Hubert now has 10 points on the season, with a team-high four goals along with two assists. Washington has seven points, including six in the last two matches. She has a pair of goals and a BG-best three assists.
• Kennedy and redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox each have four points on the year, while senior Marissa Swindell has three and redshirt soph Rachel Muller two. Duwve has started all seven matches in goal this season, and has 30 saves, one complete-match shutout and a goals-against average of just 0.84.
• A total of 27 players have seen action in at least one match this year, and 16 of those players have made at least one start.
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons were the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference a year ago, with a four-game improvement over the 2016 season. BGSU's turnaround tied the team for 28th in the country in that department.
• BG' total of 13 victories a year ago was the second-highest in school history, while the Falcons' six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
• Fannon was voted the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year, and the Brown and Orange had four All-MAC Team selections. Two of those four returned, as Hubert was one of three Falcons to earn all-league first-team honors a season ago, while Alexis Fricke was named to the all-conference second team.
TWO IS A MAGIC NUMBER
• The Falcons ended the non-conference schedule by racking up six goals on Sunday vs. Youngstown State. BGSU has now scored two or more goals in 15 of the 28 matches since Matt Fannon became head coach prior to the 2017 season.
• In the Fannon Era, BGSU is a perfect 15-0-0 when scoring at least two goals, and the Falcons are 0-10-3 when being held to fewer than two goals.
DUWVE CAN DO
• Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve earned her fifth career shutout in the win over Oakland, and she combined with two of her teammates on another clean sheet vs. Youngstown State. Duwve, who battled injuries and played in just three matches last year, already has shattered her 2017 totals in minutes and saves.
• This fall, Duwve has 30 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.84. In her BGSU career, the Sylvania, Ohio native has 122 total stops and a GAA of 1.15 in nearly 2,000 minutes between the posts.
HUBERT WATCH
• Redshirt senior Erica Hubert has proven to be a potent offensive threat for the Falcons every time she takes the field. Hubert enters the Miami match with a career total of 69 points, including 31 goals, for the Orange and Brown.
• Hubert has moved into second place on the BGSU career goals list, trailing only Kristy Coppes (52 goals from 2001-04). With seven points in the Falcons' last two games, Hubert has moved up two spots into third place on that career list. She trails only Coppes (111 points) and Samantha Meister (73 points from 2002-05) on that chart.
• Hubert has scored eight career match-winning goals, tying her for third on that BG list. She is just one behind second-place Corbie Yee (2005-08). Coppes, not surprisingly, holds the BG mark with 14 match winners.
• Hubert now has 22 goals and 50 points at Cochrane Stadium, trailing only Coppes (28 goals and 60 points in home games) on this BG lists.
PRESIDENTS DAY: KENNEDY & WASHINGTON MAKING THEIR MARK
• Junior Maureen Kennedy tied the school single-season record with 10 assists a year ago. After registering a pair of helpers against Youngstown State, Kennedy enters the Miami match with 16 career assists. She has moved into a tie for eighth place on that chart. Kennedy now has 28 total points in her BG career to date.
• Classmate Chelsee Washington scored six points in last week's two matches, including a career-high five vs. Youngstown State. Washington now has seven points on the season, and has matched her total for all of last year. She has 20 career points, on six goals and eight assists.
THE 2018 CAPTAINS
• Seniors Morgan Abbitt and Erica Hubert and redshirt junior Victoria Cope are the captains of the 2018 Falcons.
THE OPPONENTS
• Miami is 2-4-1 on the year, but the RedHawks have already matched the win total for all of last season, and the team has seven goals, just two shy of the 2017 team's total. MU is a perfect 2-0-0 at home this fall. Lyda Bogdanovitch leads the team with two goals, while Jordan King has an MU-best four assists. In goal, Patricia Koutoulas has played every second and has 36 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of 1.64. Last year, the 'Hawks went 2-15-1 overall and 2-8-1 in conference play. First-year head coach Courtney Sirmans inherited eight letterwinners from that team.
• Ball State has a 4-1-1 record heading into a Friday match with Toledo. The Cardinals have compiled that mark despite playing just one home contest to date – Sunday's 3-1 win over Omaha. Tatiana Mason leads the team with three goals and seven points, and all three of her goals have been game-winners. Tristin Stuteville has started all six matches in goal, and has 24 saves and a GAA of just 0.65. Coach Craig Roberts welcomed back 19 players from a 2017 club that went 11-7-3 overall and 8-1-2 in the MAC en route to a West Division crown.
THE SERIES
• BGSU trails Miami, 13-8-3, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Falcons are unbeaten in the last two meetings. Last year, BG captured a 4-1 win at Cochrane Stadium, snapping an eight-match series winless streak. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the Falcons' last trip to Oxford, in 2016. BGSU is 5-5-1 in home matches, 3-7-2 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site contests vs. the RedHawks.
• The Falcons trail Ball State, 14-3-3, in that series, and the Cardinals have won seven-straight meetings. Last year, BSU pulled out a 2-1 win at Cochrane, while the Cards captured a 2-0 contest in BG's last trip to Muncie two years ago. The Falcons' last win in the series came in 2008, and BGSU's last – and only – road victory over the Cardinals came in 2003. BG is 2-7-0 at home and 1-7-3 on the road vs. BSU.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the Ball State contest, the Falcons will begin the home portion of the Mid-American Conference schedule with a pair of matches at Cochrane Stadium. BGSU will face Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 28, before welcoming Western Michigan to town on Sunday, Sept. 30.
• The NIU match begins a stretch which sees the Falcons play five of six games at home. Admission to all home regular-season matches is free.
