September 26, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons' cross country programs are back in action this weekend as the men's team and some of the women's team travel south for the Greater Louisville Classic, while other members of the women's team will head to Akron for the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. In Louisville, the men's team will be the first to compete on Saturday (Sept. 29) with a start time of 9:30am and the women's team will follow later in the day with a scheduled start for 10:15am. For those going to Akron, they will also be competing on Saturday (Sept. 29) with two races begin held, one at 2pm and the other at 3:30pm.Â
A Look At The Competition
The event in Louisville will be the largest one to date, with the Falcons competing against more than 20 other Division I schools, making this a big test for the program. Hosting Louisville is just a sample of the tough competition for this weekend. Both the men and women's programs for Louisville are currently ranked 14th in the USTFCCCA Regional Coaches' Rankings for the Southeast Region. As for the group going to Akron, there will be a total of 37 schools on site, participating in the various races throughout the day. Kent State and Ohio will also be participating in Akron, giving the team more conference experience leading into the MAC Championship.
Quotes Of The Coach
The outlook for this weekend is to see continued improvement from the teams. "This is one of two more race opportunities before the MAC Championships, so we want to focus on closing the gaps between our 1-7," said Assistant Coach Juan Carrillo. "The goal is to go there and compete to the best of our current fitness." The Falcons have been able to show consistent improvement in each race this year and will hope to carry that through this weekend.
Gaining Ground
The men's team will look to continue their success this season, as they try to climb the ladder in the Great Lakes Region. Currently, they are ranked 13th in the USTFCCCA Regional Coaches' Rankings, behind fellow Mid-American Conference members Central Michigan (12th) and Miami (8th). For the women's team, this is their first race since the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener, where Rachel Walny broke her own record for the 5k.
Familiar Setting
BGSU competed in Louisville last year at the Pre-Nationals, an event that saw many milestones for the orange and brown with a total of 13 athletes recording personal bests. On the women's side, Rachel Walny led the way, setting a new school record for the 6k event, with the team finishing in 35th. As for the men, Noah Schaub led the way with a 10th place finish, while the team placed in fifth out of the 24 participating teams.
