Golden Goal Lifts Xavier Past Falcons, 1-0
September 06, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Andie Kennard's goal in the 106th minute of the match lifted Xavier University to a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Thursday evening (Sept. 6). The double-overtime non-conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
The loss snapped BGSU's home winning streak at six matches, just one shy of the school record.
It was a tale of two halves, twice. The Falcons controlled the play in the first half of the match, and BGSU dominated the first 10-minute overtime period. But, the Musketeers seemed to have the momentum in the second half of regulation, and XU again seized momentum in the second OT.
Shot attempts were even on the night, as both sides fired 16 total shots. BGSU had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, ,but XU goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro made eight saves to earn the win. BG junior Kathleen Duwve had three saves at the other end of the pitch.
For the Falcons, Thursday marked the third overtime match in four games this season to date.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 3' | BGSU had a 7-3 lead in first-half shot attempts, and the Falcons' first effort came just 2:58 into the match. Sophomore Nikki Cox slid a pass to junior Chelsee Washington, but Washington's shot from the top of the box sailed high.
• 8' | The Falcons worked the ball along the left side of the pitch, as soph Nikhita Jacob and senior Jennifer Reyes combined to get the ball to junior Maureen Kennedy. Kennedy's diagonal ball found senior Erica Hubert, who had raced behind the XU back line, but Hubert's header from the center of the box went over the crossbar.
• 20' | Xavier's first solid chance off the night came off of a corner kick, but an effort by Grace Bahr was blocked near the top of the 18. The rebound caromed to Carrie Lewis, but her shot rolled wide of the far post.
• 30' | Falcon freshman Mackenzie Reuber took a pass from senior Marissa Swindell, and Reuber played a ball into the box from the right side, but XU 'keeper Toni Bizzarro was able to grab the cross before a Falcon striker could get there.
• 31' | Quickly, however, BG got the ball back, and Hubert dribbled around several would-be defenders. The senior cut the ball back and fired a bullet, but the shot whizzed wide of the left post.
• 45' | With exactly one minute left in the half, freshman Sarah Allen took a pass from classmate Ashley Miller, and Allen was fouled just outside the XU penalty box. The ensuing free kick off the boot of Kennedy was a blast that was headed toward the far (left) corner, but a diving save by Bizzarro kept the ball out of the net. No BG player could get a boot on the rebound, and the ball went over the line for a corner kick. Senior Alexis Fricke quickly tracked down the ball and took that corner, but the ball was knocked out of the box as the half ended.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 48' | A long left-side cross resulted in a shot by Xavier's Grace Brauer, but that effort from near the top of the box was blocked by onrushing BG 'keeper Kathleen Duwve.
• 49' | Off of a corner kick, XU's Andie Kennard fired high from the right side of the box. The visitors had a total of four shot attempts in the first 5:10 of the period.
• 52' | After a Xavier player knocked the ball out of bounds in front of the bleachers, a quick throw-in by Reuber found Hubert. The senior evaded several defenders and slid a pass to Swindell. Swindell also eluded multiple XU players, created some space and hit a shot in the box, but Bizzarro was able to smother the shot at the near post.
• 56' | Washington stole the ball at midfield and played it forward to Cox, who took the ball to the end line and won her team a corner kick.
• 56' | Off of that corner, the ball came to Cox near the top of the penalty area on the right side. Her drive headed toward the far post, and Swindell redirected it on frame. But, Bizzarro was in position to make a point-blank save, almost in self-defense. Swindell got a boot on the rebound, but the ball went wide of the right post.
• 72' | A Xavier free kick, taken from near the northeast corner of the field, found the head of Allison Klimkowski, and the XU freshman put her shot on goal, but Duwve made a leaping grab.
• 86' | With Hubert streaking down the center of the pitch on a BG counterattack, XU's Bahr pulled her down and was shown a yellow card. The ensuing free kick, taken by Kennedy, found the head of Washington, but the shot went wide. That was the final chance for either team in regulation, and the match headed to overtime.
FIRST OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 92' | The Falcons came out like the proverbial house afire to begin the extra session. BG was able to string together several passes, and Cox found sophomore Sophia Barnes with the last of those passes. Barnes cut the ball back and hit a hard shot, but Bizzarro was able to make the save.
• 93 | BG got the ball back, and a Cox shot from distance seemed to give Bizzarro a little bit of trouble, but the XU 'keeper stopped the ball after a short-hop.
• 94' | The Falcons got the ball right back. Just 20 seconds after the Cox effort, Hubert hit a shot that was blocked, but the rebound went to junior Kristin Tveit, who quickly fired a shot of her own. Bizzarro, however, made her third save in the span of just 87 seconds.
• 97' | Senior Morgan Abbitt's long ball forward found Cox, who won the Brown and Orange another corner kick. That Kennedy kick was met by Washington, but her header was deflected by a defender out of play for another corner. This time, however, the Musketeers were able to clear the ball out of danger.
• 98' | With 2:05 left in the period, the visitors' Brooke Sroka got past a defender near midfield and made a long run down the left side. Sroka fired a hard shot from just outside the 18, but the ball went just wide of the left post.
SECOND OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 101' | The visitors quickly moved the ball downfield as the second OT got underway, and Kenadie Carlson fired a shot with only 20 seconds gone. That effort, however, went wide.
•103' | After a BGSU foul, a free kick by Samantha Dewey glanced off the outside of the left goalpost and out of play for a BG goal kick. The visitors won the ball back, and another Dewey effort just 35 seconds later was blocked.
• 106' | GOAL | The Musketeers ended the match when Samantha Dewey slid a pass to her right, as Kennard entered the box unmarked. Duwve was forced to come off of her line in an attempt to cut down the shooting angle, but Kennard was able to curve a ball around the BG 'keeper and into the left side of the goal. Dewey drew the lone assist on the play.
STATISTICS
• Each team had 16 shots in the match, with the Falcons owning an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
• Bizzarro made eight saves to pick up the win, while Duwve had three stops for the Falcons.
• Hubert led all players with five shots in the match, while Carrie Lewis led the visitors with four total shots. Swindell and Kennedy each put two shots on goal for the Falcons, as did Kennard for the Musketeers.
• Duwve, Abbitt, Fricke and Kennedy each played all 105-plus minutes for the Brown and Orange.
FALCON NOTES
• Thursday's loss snapped a six-match home winning streak for the Falcons. That streak fell just one shy of the school record of seven-straight wins at Cochrane, compiled by the 2008 team. BGSU's last loss at home was a 2-1 setback vs. Ball State last Sept. 22.
• BGSU was shut out for the second time this season, but just the third time in 25 matches since Matt Fannon assumed the head-coaching duties.
• The Falcons were held without a goal at Cochrane Stadium for the first time in nearly two years. BG had not been blanked at home since a 1-0 setback vs. Kent State on Sept. 25, 2016.
• Freshman Sarah Allen made her BGSU debut in Thursday's match. Allen checked into the match for the first time with 8:17 remaining in the first half. She played the remainder of that period, then played the last 20-plus minutes of the second half.
• Three of the Falcons' first four matches of the season have gone to overtime. BGSU played a total of three OT contests in each of the last three seasons.
• BG now has an all-time record of 21-30-39 in overtime matches.Â
• Junior Kathleen Duwve has a goals-against average of just 0.67 on the season. Officially, Xavier's goal snapped a shutout streak of 195:49 for Duwve and the Falcons. Unofficially, however, the goal stopped a scoreless string of 234:10, as BG blanked Valparaiso for 38-plus minutes last weekend. The Valpo match was cancelled due to inclement weather, and the statistics do not count.
WHAT'S NEXT?
• The Falcons return to the road to face nationally-ranked Northwestern on Sunday (Sept. 9). BG meets the No. 15 Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) at Martin Stadium in Evansville, Ill.
• Then, BG returns to Cochrane Stadium for a pair of matches next week. BG battles DePaul next Thursday (Sept. 13), before meeting Youngstown State three days later (Sept. 16). The DePaul match begins at 5:00 p.m., while the YSU contest is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane. Admission is free to all BGSU regular-season home soccer action.
