January 22, 2019 | Gymnastics
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University's Jovannah East and Taylor Worthington were named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast and Specialist of the Week following the Falcons' performance over the weekend.
BGSU tied its program record in a home opener by scoring 194.825 points against UIC Saturday. The score marked an increase of more than 5.000 team points over the squad's first meet of the year – the largest meet-to-meet increase for the program since 2006. East and Worthington were key cogs to that improvement.
East competed in three events, tying the program record with a 9.950 on balance beam, earning a perfect 10.0 score from one of the two judges. She added a 9.900 on floor and a 9.825 on vault. All three scores were the best or tied for best scores in the MAC on the week for the respective apparatus. By taking first place in the meet on beam and floor, she earned the 32nd and 33rd first-place event finishes of her career.
Worthington equaled East's score on vault with a career-best 9.825. She added a career-high 9.900 on beam, the second-best beam score of the week in the MAC. Her vault score was tied for the best on the week in the conference.
Bowling Green will be back in action Sunday as the Falcons open conference play with a triangular at Northern Illinois. The Falcons will also see UIC for the second consecutive week at the meet, which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm ET.
