January 04, 2019 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team has been selected to finish second in the 2019 Mid-American Conference preseason coaches poll, as released by the league today. The poll is voted on by the conference's seven head coaches.
Northern Illinois earned three first place votes and 42 total vote points to earn the nod as preseason favorites. Bowling Green got one first place and 37 vote points for second place. Central Michigan was third, followed by Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Kent State and Western Michigan. Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ball State each got one vote for MAC Champion.
"Our program is excited to get the 2019 season started," BGSU Head Coach Kerrie Turner said. "Earning second place in the preseason poll is a credit to the hard work our student-athletes have put into training and the standard of excellence within the program. The MAC is very competitive as a gymnastics conference and I expect it will be another exciting season and championship as all seven teams strive for perfection. Our program will certainly work to meet and exceed this second place ranking."
BGSU was just .025 points shy of second place at the MAC Championships last year and the Falcons return Jovannah East, who became just the second student-athlete in program history to qualify for the national championships. Northern Illinois placed second at the MAC Championships a year agao and return the 2018 Specialist of the Year Anna Martucci. Central Michigan is the defending MAC champions, winning their 16th MAC title.
The 2019 MAC Gymnastics Championships will be hosted by Northern Illinois March 23.
BGSU opens the season in a week as the Falcons compete in a four-way meet at Alabama on Friday, Jan. 11 at 8:30 pm ET. Bowling Green joins Michigan and Denver for the meet at Alabama. The Falcons will open the home campaign Saturday, Jan. 19 against UIC at 4 pm in Anderson Arena.
