BGSU remains in first place in the MAC with three matches to go
Nicky Potts scored off of a corner kick with just under a minute gone in the second overtime period, lifting Ball State University to a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20) at Cochrane Stadium.
The loss was the first in Mid-American Conference play for the Falcons (9-5-2, 7-1-0 MAC), and snapped a seven-match winning streak.
BGSU outshot Ball State, 27-14, and had eight shots on goal to the Cardinals' four, but Tristin Stuteville made eight saves to keep BG off of the scoreboard. BGSU senior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve made three saves, including a diving stop of a Sam Kambol penalty kick in the second half to keep the match scoreless until the 101st minute.
The Cardinals (12-4-0, 6-2-0 MAC) are in second place in the conference standings, three points behind league-leading BGSU, with three games remaining in the regular season.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 7' | Unofficially, BGSU had 85 percent of the possession in the game's first 10 minutes. Sophomores Sarah Allen and Mackenzie Reuber teamed up to move the ball down the right side of the field, and Reuber won a corner, but the Cardinals were able to deal with said corner.
• 13' | Reuber again took a pass from Allen, hitting a right-side cross into the box. The ball just missed connections with both redshirt junior Nikki Cox and senior Chelsee Washington, as BSU defenders were able to gum up the works and keep both BG players from getting a shot off. BSU goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville was finally able to dive on the ball on the far side of the penalty area.
• 14' | After a free kick by senior Maureen Kennedy, Washington laid the ball off for sophomore Alexis Miller, but Miller's shot from outside the box was wide.
• 20' | The Cardinals headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick, but the assistant referee's flag was raised and the center referee had blown his whistle long before the ball reached the penalty area, as a foul had been called on the visitors.
• 22' | Off of a corner kick by BSU's Sam Kambol, Peighton Cook's header sailed wide.
• 26' | After a BG foul, Stuteville came forward to take the ensuing BSU free kick near midfield. Her kick sailed into the box, where a BG player deflected it. The ball went to Nicky Potts, who hit a shot from the center of the 18-yard area, but the shot went well over the crossbar.
• 32' | On a BGSU counterattack, Washington made a long run down the center of the park, then slid a pass to Kennedy White. The freshman fired a shot fro the left side of the box, but her effort went just wide of the near post.
• 34' | A Kennedy free kick was deflected, but Nikki Cox got to the ball in the penalty area. She hit a pair of dangerous-looking shots, but both were blocked by BSU backliners.
• 40' | White, Washington and freshman Katie Cox combined to win a corner kick. That kick, taken by freshman Jasmine Dijsselhof, was punched away from the far side of the net by Stuteville. BG took another corner from the other side of the field, but that ball was knocked over the line by a Falcon player for a goal kick.
• 44' | Sophomore Ruby Linton hit a shot from distance, putting that effort on frame, but Stuteville was able to make the save.
• 45' | With half a minute left in the period, freshman Makenzie Ortman took a pass from classmate Lena Kova and hit a shot. A lunging BSU player was able to deflect that shot, and Stuteville grabbed it near the far post.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 51'  | Just over five minutes into the period, BSU's Kerrigan Johnson's corner kick found Cook at the far post, but Cook's header was off line.
• 55' | BGSU possessed the ball for a lengthy stretch, with both Cox sisters, Reuber and Ortman involved in the buildup. Ortman hit a nifty serve into the box from the right side, and Washington met the ball with a hard header from near the six-yard line. But, the senior's bullet of a shot was hit directly at Stuteville, who made the save.
• 56' | BG won the ball back and the Cardinals immediately committed a foul. Kennedy blasted the ensuing free kick toward goal, but the shot went just over the bar.
• 59' | Katie Cox found Allen with a pass, and Allen's shot was parried by the BSU 'keeper. Reuber got a boot on the rebound, attempting to poke the ball past Stuteville, but the shot went wide left, and the Cardinals eventually cleared the ball out of danger.
• 62' | PENALTY KICK | A BSU player was fouled in the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. Kambol took the shot for the Cardinals, but senior Kathleen Duwve made an impressive diving save to keep the match scoreless.
• 82' | Washington took a pass from Allen and hit a shot from distance. The shot had some pace, but Stuteville was there to make the stop near the left post.
• 86' | Nikki Cox hit a hard shot that the BSU 'keeper was just able to reach. She tipped the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick. That corner went over a host of players in the six-yard box and bounced out the other side.
• 90' | With under a minute to go, Dijsselhof took a Katie Cox pass and hit a left-side diagonal ball toward the goal. The cross/shot, however, landed on top of the net.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 95' | Kennedy's free kick was flicked toward the box by Katie Cox. Nikki Cox settled the ball and hit a turnaround shot, but it went high.
• 97' | Allen made a long run for the Falcons, and passed the ball to Washington on her left. Washington took a touch, then fired a shot, but the effort went outside the left post.
• 99' | Kambol crossed the ball to a wide-open Cook just outside the box. By the time Cook settled it and took a shot, however, a BG player blocked her shot attempt, and the Falcons cleared the ball out of danger.
• 101' | GOAL | With just under a minute gone in the second OT period, Nicky Potts scored from close range after a Johnson corner kick, giving the Cardinals the victory.
