Senior defender earns second-team accolades from CoSIDA
Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Maureen Kennedy has been named to the 2019 Academic All-District® Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The team was announced on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7).
Kennedy, a senior, earns Academic All-District® accolades for the second consecutive season. She has been named to the second team in 2019 after earning first-team honors a year ago.
Kennedy, a native of Cypress, Calif., was named the Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Year earlier on Thursday, earning that honor for the second-straight year. The defender also was named to the All-MAC First Team for the second year in a row.
Kennedy has 17 points on the year, with five goals and seven assists, and she has helped the BG defense record five shutouts. In MAC play, Kennedy – one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award – had 12 points on three goals and a team-leading six assists. She has scored a pair of GWG, and saw another goal tie a match with just 19.3 seconds remaining in regulation, before BG won in overtime. Kennedy is second in school history with 31 assists, and she has 61 career points. Kennedy is ranked on all four BGSU career offensive lists – goals, assists, points and GWG.
In the classroom, Kennedy is a psychology major with minors in biology and gerontology and a 3.954 cumulative GPA. She plans to attend graduate school in occupational therapy upon the completion of her undergraduate career.
The Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The NCAA Division I teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Academic All-America® ballot.
The Falcons posted a 4-1 win over Central Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 3), and BGSU will be the site for the remainder of the league tourney. The Falcons, the number-one seed, will host fourth-seeded Buffalo on Friday (Nov. 8), in a 4:00 p.m. start. The winner of that match will advance to Sunday's (Nov. 10) MAC Tournament championship, which is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
