The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team enjoyed another uber-successful regular-season run, and on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7), numerous Falcons earned individual awards for their team's success. Three BGSU players were named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team, and the Falcons had three standouts chosen to the second team as well.
Additionally, the Orange and Brown garnered three of the league's four specialty awards for the second consecutive season, and two first-year Falcons landed on the MAC's All-Freshman Team.
Matt Fannon was named MAC Coach of the Year for the third time in his three seasons with the Falcons, while senior Chelsee Washington was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. Classmate Maureen Kennedy took home the MAC Defensive-Player-of-the-Year award for the second year in a row.
Kennedy, Washington and redshirt junior Nikki Cox all were named to the All-MAC First Team, with senior Kathleen Duwve and freshmen Audrey Shea and Kennedy White named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Shea and White also were chosen to the MAC's All-Freshman Team.
The 2019 season marks the first time in program history that the Falcons have had six total All-MAC Team selections. The 'old' record of five was set last season.
The Falcons have had 11 All-MAC First-Team recipients in Fannon's three years at the helm, after having seven in the first two decades of women's soccer.
Fannon is the first coach in MAC women's soccer history to be named MAC Coach of the Year in three consecutive seasons. Only two other coaches in MAC history – Eastern Michigan's Scott Hall and Kent State's Rob Marinaro – have won the award a total of three times.
"We obviously appreciate being voted staff of the year," said Fannon. "Considering (assistant coach) Cian (McDonald) was forced to return home in late July, it is important to recognize the impact he has made from 3,500 miles away in incredibly difficult circumstances. On top of that, Dan (Ball), Erin (Kielmeyer) and Bernie (Compton) – who are all students – have worked far beyond their grad-assistant/volunteer roles and been instrumental in our success. Fortunately, we have a team of simply wonderful women who make us enjoy every second of our time here."
Washington is the third player to win MAC Offensive P-O-Y honors in program history, and the third in as many years. Skylar Fleak captured that award two years ago, while Erica Hubert won it last season.
"Chelsee is the epitome of what we are all about here at BG," said Fannon. "She is an incredible leader who demands excellence from herself and everyone around her. When life is at its hardest, Chelsee is at her best. I am over the moon for her."
Kennedy became BG's first-ever Defensive P-O-Y award winner last season, and is now the program's first-ever back-to-back recipient of that honor.
"Obviously we are delighted for Mo," said Fannon. "She has been incredible for us once again, and this year has really grown in her leadership and become so much tougher and more resilient. She deserves this award."
Kennedy and Washington each have been named to the All-MAC First Team for the second consecutive November. Duwve earns all-conference accolades for the second-straight season, being named to the second team after earning first-team honors last season.
Cox, Shea and White all earn All-MAC Team laurels for the first time.
"To have six players named All-MAC is really special," said Fannon. "But, I know every one of them would go straight to the rest of the squad to thank them for the award. As a team, across the board, every day so far has been fun, productive and rewarding. Everyone looks at setbacks as lessons and positives as more reasons to keep driving forward."
The Falcons have two players on the MAC's All-Freshman team for the first time since 2008. The 2019 campaign marks just the fourth time in school history that BGSU has had multiple all-frosh team members.
And, the 2019 season marks just the second time in BG annals that two freshmen have been named to the All-MAC Team. Prior to Shea and White, only two freshmen had ever made the all-league squad, and both came in 1998 (Tracy Gleixner first team, Beth Wechsler second team).
Fannon has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 13-5-2, and a MAC record of 10-1-0. BGSU won the league regular-season title for the second consecutive season, and the Falcons' total of 10 conference wins tied the school record that was set last year. BG is the first team in MAC history to win 10 league matches in back-to-back seasons. The Falcons are 40-17-6 overall and 26-6-1 in MAC regular-season matches since Fannon assumed the helm prior to the 2017 season.
Washington has scored 20 points this year to date, including six goals and a team-leading eight assists. In MAC games, she tied for the team scoring lead, with 14 points in the 11 conference contests. Washington scored five goals and added four assists in MAC play. She has had a pair of game-winning goals this season, both coming in overtime, and scored the tying goal in the final minute of another contest. Washington has 60 career points, and is ranked in the school's top-10 in goals, assists, points and GWG.
Kennedy has 17 points on the year, with five goals and seven assists, and she has helped the BG defense record five shutouts. In MAC play, Kennedy – one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award – had 12 points on three goals and a team-leading six assists. She has scored a pair of GWG, and saw another goal tie a match with just 19.3 seconds remaining in regulation, before BG won in overtime. Kennedy is second in school history with 31 assists, and she has 61 career points. Like Washington, Kennedy is ranked on all four BGSU career offensive lists – goals, assists, points and GWG.
Cox has team-leading totals of nine goals and 23 points this season, and she paces the Falcons with three GWG in 2019. Cox scored the winning goal in back-to-back games against Toledo and Central Michigan, with the win over UT enabling BG to clinch the MAC regular-season crown outright and the victory over CMU coming in the league tourney quarterfinals. She has 42 points in 42 career games at BGSU.
Duwve has started 19 of BGSU's 20 matches this season, including all 11 MAC contests. She has 43 saves and a goals-against average of 1.07 on the year, and has saved two penalty kicks this season to date. In conference games this fall, Duwve had a GAA of just 0.72, allowing eight goals in the 11 matches. She is second in school history with 30 career wins, and is ranked fifth or higher on every BGSU career goalkeeping list.
Shea has started 19 of BGSU's 20 games this season, and has played a team-high 1717 minutes. After BGSU graduated two All-MAC defenders off of last year's team, Shea stepped into the starting lineup in the season opener and helped the Falcons repeat as league regular-season champions. She missed the home opener (Aug. 25) due to an injury suffered in the previous game, but returned to the lineup for the next match, and was on the field for every second of the next 13 contest. The next time she came off of the field was Oct. 24, when she was subbed out with 20 minutes left in a match BG led by six goals at the time.
White has 22 points on the year, including a team-leading 10 goals. She is the first Falcon freshman to post a double-digit goal total since 2001, and is only the third in program history. White had a three-game goal-scoring streak early in the season, and enters the UB match riding a four-game goal streak. She has two GWG including one Golden Goal, and tied for the team lead with 14 points (including a BG-best six goals) in MAC regular-season action.
The Falcons posted a 4-1 win over Central Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament, and BGSU will be the site for the remainder of the league tourney. The Falcons, the number-one seed, will host fourth-seeded Buffalo on Friday (Nov. 8), in a 4:00 p.m. start. The winner of that match will advance to Sunday's (Nov. 10) MAC Tournament championship, which is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
