Spirited Falcon Comeback Effort Falls Just Short in Kent
February 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Flashes get two free throws with 5.5 seconds left en route to 77-73 win
A spirited comeback effort by the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on the road fell just short on Saturday evening (Feb. 20), as Kent State University's Asiah Dingle hit a pair of free throws with just 5.5 seconds left to give her team the lead for good. The Golden Flashes went on to pick up a 77-73 win in Mid-American Conference action at the M.A.C. Center.
BGSU battled back from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to tie the game in the final seconds, before Dingle hit her charity tosses. The Flashes got a stop at the other end, and KSU added two more tosses with 1.6 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.

Freshman Morgan McMillen scored 19 points and went 5-for-8 from the three-point line for the Falcons (8-15, 1-11 MAC), while junior Andrea Cecil had 17 points on the night. Cecil hit a pair of free throws with 16.7 seconds left to tie the game before a foul was called just over 11 seconds later as Dingle drove to the hoop and missed a layup.
Dingle had a game-high 21 points, pacing four Flashes (14-9, 7-5 MAC) in double digits. Ali Poole added 17 points, Megan Carter 16 and Lindsey Thall 12 for the hosts.
BGSU shot 50 percent from both the field (22-of-44) and the arc (9-of-18), and the Falcons went 20-of-22 (90.9%) at the free-throw line, including a 14-of-15 effort from the stripe in the fourth quarter. Kent State shot just 38.8% from the field and 36.0% from the arc for the game, but the Flashes attempted 23 more field goals than BGSU, in part due to 23 Falcon turnovers.
After trailing by 13 points with just over five-and-a-half minutes to go, BG went on a 15-2 run, tying the score on a pair of Sydney Lambert free throws with 1:54 remaining. KSU would regain the lead on a steal and layup, but Cecil's pressure-packed charity tosses tied the game once again with 16.7 seconds remaining.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Flashes hit six three-pointers in the first quarter, before going just 3-for-11 from the arc over the final 30 minutes.
• Poole hit a corner three to open the game's scoring, before freshman Kadie Hempfling drove and dished the ball to senior Maddie Cole for a layup. Carter knocked down a triple, but Cecil kicked the ball out to Hempfling for a three-ball.
• Hempfling hit her second-straight long-distance shot, taking a McMillen pass and connecting for an 8-6 BG lead. Trifectas from Alexa Golden and Thall, however, gave the Flashes a four-point advantage.
• McMillen hit a step-back jumper, but Dingle's Euro-step driving layup restored KSU's four-point lead. Cole grabbed her own miss and laid the ball back up and in, cutting the Flashes' lead to two, 14-12.
• That putback was the first of four-straight successful shots for the Brown and Orange, but the hosts were scoring at the other end. Poole hit a second-chance three, before Cecil responded with a layup.
• Poole came down and hit a corner three, for a 20-14 KSU lead, but Cecil scored inside once again. Then, McMillen knocked down a three-point try from the right wing, and KSU's lead was 20-19.
• At that point, the Falcons were 8-of-10 from the floor, and BG was a perfect 3-for-3 from the arc.
• Cecil was called for her second foul of the game, but KSU's Merissa Barber-Smith came off of the bench and quickly picked up a pair of fouls of her own.
• After the quick-scoring start for both clubs, BG went scoreless for the last few minutes of the quarter, while KSU scored three points at the foul line in the late going, including a pair of Carter charity tosses with just 10.5 seconds to go. KSU led, 25-19, after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Hempfling drove and kicked to McMillen for a corner three on the first possession, but Thall rattled home a long-range shot at the other end. After a BG turnover, sophomore Madisen Parker stole the ball right back and was fouled on a layup attempt. Parker hit two shots at the stripe, and senior Sydney Lambert's driving one-hander brought BG within two.
• A foul was called on Hempfling, her second of the game, at the 8:08 mark, and the Flashes scored the next four points on a pair of layups.
• Freshman Molly Dever drove and kicked the ball to Parker for a triple that cut the KSU lead in half, and after the hosts answered with a bucket, sophomore Angela Perry converted a three-point play around the second-quarter media timeout. Perry's free throw after play resumed made it a 34-32 game.
• Then, McMillen's three-ball from the right side – off of another Dever pass – bounced off the rim and through the hoop, giving the Falcons a 35-34 lead, and after Perry blocked an ill-advised layup try to KSU's Sydney Brinlee, Dever rebounded her own miss and was fouled at the other end. The Cleveland native hit both tosses for a three-point BG advantage.
• KSU responded with the next four points, but once again, the Dever-to-McMillen connection produced points. One freshman found another for a three-pointer from the top of the arc and a 40-38 lead. BG took that two-point advantage into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons shot at least 54 percent from the floor in every quarter but the third. In that period, BG went just 3-of-10 from the field.
• Thall scored inside, and Carter's layup try got a friendly roll to give the hosts the lead. Cecil hit a contested banker to tie the game at 42-42, and after Golden threw in a tough shot, McMillen spotted Cecil for a corner three and a 45-44 lead.
• Carter's three-point play gave KSU the lead, but Lambert grabbed a defensive rebound, came downcourt and lobbed the ball inside to a wide-open Perry for a layup that tied the score at 47-all.
• The Flashes, however, would score the next 11 points of the game. First Hempfling, then Cecil picked up foul number three in the game, with the call against Cecil coming with 6:03 left in the quarter.
• Dingle's steal and layup was followed by a Golden layup that gave KSU a 53-47 lead – the largest of the game to that point – and BG used a timeout with 4:12 left in the period.
• But, Dingle scored five-straight points on a layup, then a three-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer, giving the Flashes a 58-47 lead. Perry split a pair of free throw at the 1:41 mark to stop KSU's run, and the Falcons trailed by 10 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Poole hit a three-pointer on the first possession of the period, and KSU's lead was 13 points, the largest of the game.
• Cecil answered with a layup, but Dingle hit a driving layup of her own. McMillen scored inside almost immediately, but Cecil was whistled for her fourth foul at the 7:55 mark, and the Flashes scored off of the ensuing inbounds pass to take a 65-52 lead.
• Then, BG turned the ball over, but the Flashes missed a layup in transition. But, KSU got the rebound. But, McMillen tied up a Golden Flash, and the possession arrow favored the Falcons. The deficit remained 13 points with 7:05 on the clock.
• Golden was assessed her third foul, then her fourth. After the latter infraction, Lambert hit two free throws. Thall scored inside for the hosts, but Lambert converted a nifty floater to cut the KSU lead to 67-56.
• The Flashes took a 13-point lead once again, on a Mariah Modkins jumper with 5:39 left. Then, however, the Falcons would score the next 11 points, holding the hosts scoreless for a span of 3:17.
• The BG run began when McMillen took a quick pass from Lambert and drained a three-pointer. Coach Robyn Fralick used a timeout, and out of that break, Lambert stole the ball, and Cecil was fouled, hitting the resulting free throws.
• Those Cecil tosses were the first and second of six-straight BG points that came at the charity stripe. KSU missed a shot, Dever grabbed the rebound and was fouled, and the freshman calmly knocked down two tosses at the 4:38 mark, cutting the KSU lead to 69-63.
• The Flashes came down and took a quick shot that was off the mark, but a BG shot was no good at the other end. Again, however, KSU missed a shot, and Cecil corralled the rebound, went the length of the court and scored. But, after several instances of Euro-steppin' had occurred without whistles in the first 37:02 of the game, Cecil was called for a travel and the bucket was nullified.
• But, the Flashes turned the ball right back over to the Falcons, and Cecil drove the paint once again. This time, the junior was fouled at the 3:31 mark, and made two shots to make it a four-point game.
• The teams traded misses, before the Flashes missed again. Cecil's rebound gave the ball back to the Brown and Orange, and Lambert's nifty no-look pass found Dever cutting behind the KSU defense, and the freshman's layup cut the KSU lead to two.
• A BG foul with 2:22 remaining sent Dingle to the line, and she hit both shots to stop Kent State's scoring drought and give the hosts a 71-67 lead. But, Parker was fouled just 11 seconds later, knocking down both of her attempts to make it a two-point game once again.
• KSU turned the ball over once again, as Dever jumped the route and grabbed a cross-court pass. The Cleveland native got the ball to Lambert, who was fouled on a layup try that bounced around the rim and fell off. But, with 1:54 to go, the senior point guard made both free-throw tries to tie the game at 71.
• BG got a stop, as Carter missed a long-distance shot, but a BG turnover led to a Poole steal and layup. The Flashes, now leading by a 73-71 score, took a timeout.
• After the break, a BG layup was off the mark with 40 seconds left. KSU rebounded the ball, using another timeout with 19.7 seconds to go and 10 seconds on the shot clock.
• After the timeout, though, the inbounds pass went awry, and in the scramble for the loose ball, Cecil was fouled by Thall. The foul was Thall's fifth, and with 16.7 seconds remaining, Cecil went to the line and hit the first, then the second free throw, tying the game at 73-73.
• The next possession saw Dingle miss a driving layup, but after the ball bounced off of the rim and away, a foul was called on the Falcons, and Dingle hit both shots.
• BG used a timeout, inbounding the ball in the frontcourt, but as BG attempted to get the ball to Perry, the ball went out of bounds off of the Falcons.
• KSU successfully inbounded the ball, and Lambert quickly fouled Carter, who hit a pair of free throws, giving the Flashes a four-point lead and capping the scoring with 1.6 seconds to go.
FINAL TEAM STATISTICS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, shot 50 percent, from both the floor (22-of-44) and the three-point line (9-for-18). BGSU also was 20-of-22 (90.9%) at the free-throw line.
