FRIDAY RECAP: Falcons Sweep a Pair of Thrillers at GWU Tournament
SATURDAY RECAP: It's a Saturday Sweep for the Falcons
SUNDAY RECAP: Six-Run Sixth is the Difference
Gonzalez, a third baseman, was a key contributor as BGSU went 4-1 at the GWU Tournament over the weekend. Gonzalez tied for the team lead with a .412 batting average, going 7-for-17 in the five games. Six of those seven hits went for extra bases, as she had five doubles and a grand slam, and she led the team with a slugging percentage of .882.
The Kingsburg, Calif., native had at least one hit in each of the five games. On Friday (Feb. 22), she went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk in BG's 8-7 win over defending Northeast Conference champion Saint Francis, scoring BG's eighth run of the game. Then, in the nightcap, Gonzalez hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, giving BG a five-run lead, and BG would need every one of those runs as the Falcons held off a late charge by host Gardner-Webb.
On Saturday (Feb. 23), Gonzalez had a three-run double in the first inning, giving BG an early lead in what would prove to be a 7-4 win over GWU. She had a total of seven RBI in back-to-back at-bats vs. the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Saturday's second game saw Gonzalez double and walk in three plate appearances as BG topped East Tennessee State, 3-0.
Then, on Sunday (Feb. 24), Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with yet another double and two runs scored in BG's lone loss of the weekend, vs. SFU.
On the season, Gonzalez is hitting .318 with an on-base pct. of .423 and a .682 slugging pct. She is tied with classmate Sammy Dees for first in the MAC and ninth in the nation in doubles per game (0.63).
Gonzalez and the Falcons head to her home state this weekend. The Falcons will play five games at the UCSB Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif., from Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 28-March 2).
