February 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Paula Comella and junior Marharita-Sophia Tavpash of Bowling Green State University's tennis programs were named MAC Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week, as announced Wednesday (Feb. 27) afternoon.
Over the past weekend, Comella and Tavpash concluded with a 2-0 record at No. 1 doubles. The duo began the weekend on the road in Dayton, Ohio on Friday (Feb. 22), topping Wright State's Madison Riley and Haily Morgan by a score of 6-1, clinching the doubles point for the Falcons.
Comella and Tavpash carried their success into Saturday's (Feb. 23) match in Perrysburg, facing Indianapolis. Against the No. 4 ranked doubles team in Division II, Nikol Alexeeva and Anna Novikova, Comella and Tavpash captured a 6-4 victory.
This is the first time this season that Comella and Tavpash have been named Doubles Team of the Week. Last season, the duo received the recognition on Feb. 28 after claiming victories against Notre Dame and Detroit, 6-3 and 6-2, respectively. Comella and Tavpash also received recognition during the 2016-17 season twice, with Comella also being named in 2015-16 with then doubles partner Drew Fillis.
The wins over the weekend helped both Comella and Tavpash move up the all-time doubles wins list at Bowling Green. Comella now sits No. 12 all-time with 72 doubles wins, while Tavpash moved up to No. 28 with 52.
Comella and Tavpash, along with the rest of the Falcon tennis team, will be back in action on March 8 when BGSU hosts Dayton at 1 p.m. in the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The match will conclude Bowling Green's non-conference schedule. The Orange and Brown are currently 5-5 on the season, while the Flyers are 2-6, but will have two matches prior to facing the Falcons.
