March 25, 2019 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio – Senior Lauren DeMeno and junior Jovannah East have qualified for the NCAA Regional round of competition, as announced by the NCAA today. At the Baton Rouge Regional hosted by LSU, DeMeno will compete on the vault, while East will take part in the all-around competition on Friday, April 5.
DeMeno will compete on vault in the third rotation with Minnesota during session 1 at 3:00 pm ET. East will compete in the second session at 6:00 pm ET with Arizona State, beginning on floor and following with vault, bars and beam in order.
A year ago, East advanced through regionals in the all-around to become just the second Falcon to compete at the NCAA Division I Gymnastics National Championships.
The NCAA today unveiled the top 36 teams that will compete for the national championship as well as the top 12 individuals among non-competing teams in each event. DeMeno and East each qualified through individual selection.
DeMeno averaged a 9.783 on vault this year and had a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.820. She posted a career-best score of 9.875 early in the season at Northern Illinois and finished the year with five consecutive scores of 9.800 or better on vault. In eight of the team's 12 meets this year, DeMeno scored 9.800 or better. DeMeno also competed on vault at NCAA regionals a year ago, recording a 9.700.
East qualified for NCAA regional competition for the third straight year, making it in the all-around for the second time. She scored a 39.250 in 2018 and won the tiebreak for a spot to nationals. This year, East is averaging a 39.097 in the all-around and has an RQS of 39.195. She had a season-best 39.375 in the final meet of the regular season, a victory over Western Michigan. East scored at least a 39.100 in six of the eight meets in which she competed on all four events during the season.
The top all-around competitor who is not on an advancing team from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top event specialist at each regional site who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor will advance to the national championships in that event only.
