UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS...
• The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team hits the road for the remainder of the season, taking on two of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference standings. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons, coming off of a double-digit win at the Stroh Center, head to Western New York for a Wednesday (March 6) night matchup with the University at Buffalo. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at UB's Alumni Arena.
• BGSU then ends the regular season on Saturday afternoon (March 9) at Ohio. The MAC Tournament begins on Monday (March 11), and the Falcons will be on the road to face a team to be determined in first-round action that evening.
THE FALCONS AND THE MAC TOURNAMENT
• Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Falcons have a MAC record of 2-14. BGSU will be either the 11th or the 12th seed for the MAC Tournament.
• Currently, BG is tied with Ball State for 11th overall in the league standings, but the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a win in the teams' lone head-to-head meeting, on Jan. 9 in Muncie.
• Regardless of this week's outcomes, the Falcons will be on the road for a first-round game on Monday (March 11). The teams seeded fifth through eighth in the final regular-season standings will host the ninth- through 12th-seeded teams, with the four winners joining the top-four seeds in Cleveland for the quarterfinal round.
• If the regular season ended today, the Falcons would travel to Toledo for the first round of the league tourney. BGSU's other possible first-round opponents include Kent State, Northern Illinois or Buffalo.
NEED-TO-KNOW INFORMATION
(These three fascinating facts are provided on a need-to-know basis)
• Following Saturday's (March 2) 62-49 win over Kent State at the Stroh Center, the Falcons have won 16 of the last 18 Senior Day/Night games since 2002, and BGSU is 21-3 in the last 24 such contests.
• The Falcons held KSU to just 49 points and 26.9 percent shooting from the field, the lowest figures for a Division-I opponent in two-and-a-half years.
• Junior Andrea Cecil had her second consecutive double-double, and her second-straight game with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, in the win over the Golden Flashes. Cecil surpassed the 20-point mark for the third consecutive contest and the fifth time in the last seven games.
CLOSE CALLS
• A total of 12 of BGSU's 27 games this season have been decided by seven points or fewer. In fact, 12 of BGSU's first 16 MAC games have been within three points with under 12 minutes remaining.
• Eleven of those 16 contests, including 10 of the 14 losses, were within three points at some time in the fourth quarter. And, no fewer than seven of the Falcons' MAC matchups have been tied or a one-possession game in the final minute.
• BGSU is currently 2-6 in games against fellow MAC East Division schools. The Falcons have been outscored by just 2.6 points per game in those eight contests.
CECIL IS SIZZLING
• Junior Andrea Cecil had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BG's win over Kent State on Saturday (March 2). It was her sixth double-double of the season and her second in as many games. The forward had 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds against Akron three days prior to the KSU game.
• Cecil, who paced BG with 23 points at Miami on Feb. 23, has scored 20 or more points on 11 occasions this season, including each of the last three games.
• The Oak Harbor, Ohio, native is averaging 21.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists over the last seven games. During that time, she has shot 55.6 percent (55-of-99) from the floor, 45.0% (9-of-20) from the arc and 91.4% (32-of-35) from the free-throw line.
GETTING DEFENSIVE
• The Falcons held Kent State to just 49 points on Saturday (March 2). The Golden Flashes made just 18 field goals in the game, shooting 26.9 percent from the floor.
• All of those totals/averages were the second-lowest by a BG opponent this season. BG allowed just 28 points, 12 field goals and 20.3% shooting in the win over Davis & Elkins back on Dec. 30.
• The last time BG gave up fewer buckets to an NCAA Division-I opponent also came against Kent State, when the Flashes made just 17 shots in last year's meeting at the Stroh, a 60-50 BG win (Jan. 17, 2018).
• BGSU had not allowed fewer than 50 points in a game against a D-I opponent in over three years, since a 71-49 win over ... Kent State on Jan. 23, 2016.
• The last time the Falcons held a D-I foe under 49 points came in the game before that KSU contest. BG downed Northern Illinois, 58-43, in DeKalb on Jan. 20, 2016.
• That NIU game also marked the last time BG held a Division-I foe to a lower field-goal percentage than KSU's on Saturday. The Huskies shot just 26.7% from the floor in that BG win in DeKalb.
McTHRILLEN: MORGAN'S OUT HERE BREAKING RECORDS
• Freshman Morgan McMillen is ranked among the national leaders in multiple three-point field-goal related categories. And, she is already ranked atop one school list, with a chance to break another long-distance mark by season's end.
• McMillen has made 81 three-point field goals this season, the second-highest total in school history. She is just 11 successful triples away from tying the BGSU single-season record of 92, set by Lauren Prochaska in 2009-10.
• McMillen has attempted a total of 220 long-range shots, a new single-season school record. Tracy Pontius held the old record, with 209 attempts in 2010-11.
BGSU RECORD BOOK – THREE-POINT FIELD GOALS MADE, SEASON
1. Lauren Prochaska (2009-10) 92
2. MORGAN McMILLEN (2018-19)Â 81
3. Angie Farmer (1999-2000)Â Â 78
4. Tracy Pontius (2008-09)Â Â Â 77
5. Tracy Pontius (2010-11)Â Â Â 76
FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
• A pair of Falcon freshmen, Kadie Hempfling and Morgan McMillen, have made an impact on the program from day one. Both players have started nearly every game, and both players are moving up several lists.
• Hempfling is ranked third or higher on no fewer than three BGSU freshman single-season charts. She is on pace to set a school record for rebounds per game by a freshman, with 8.0. Hempfling is currently third in both total rebounds (215) and assists (108) by a frosh at BG, and she is ninth in steals (38).
• With 357 points this year to date, McMillen is fourth all-time on that Falcon freshman list. And, she currently ranks third in points per game, with 13.2.
THE FALCONS: A QUICK OVERVIEW
• BGSU enters the Buffalo game with a record of 9-18, and the Falcons are 2-14 in MAC play. BG snapped a four-game losing streak with a 62-49 win over Kent State at the Stroh Center on Saturday (March 2).
• The Falcons' other win in conference action came in the first matchup with UB this season. BG downed the Bulls – an NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" team a year ago – by a 78-72 score on Feb. 13.
• BGSU finished the home portion of the schedule with a 7-7 record, and the Falcons are 2-10 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games.
• Head coach Robyn Fralick is in her first season on the BGSU bench. Her staff includes associate head coach Kim Cameron, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Karmen Graham, assistant coach Joel Whymer, director of operations Monique Rosati and video coordinator Amanda Cutcher.
• Three Falcons are scoring in double digits this season. Junior Andrea Cecil leads the way with 16.2 points per contest, and is second on the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. Cecil has had 20 or more points 11 times this year, including in each of the last three contests. She has had over 20 points and 10 rebounds in each of BG's last two games. The junior is 10th in the nation in free-throw percentage (89.5%), and she would be 26th in the country in three-point field-goal accuracy (41.9%), but she falls just short of qualifying for the NCAA minimum.
• Freshman Morgan McMillen is scoring 13.2 ppg, and has scored in double digits in 19 of her first 27 career outings. McMillen tied the school single-game record with eight triples vs. Marshall (in her second collegiate game). She is ranked 24th in the nation in three-pointers made per game, and has hit 81 on the year, the second-highest total in school history.
• Senior Sydney Lambert is averaging 11.5 ppg, along with 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. She is third on the team in boards and three-pointers made (40).
• Lambert is third at BGSU in career three-point field goals made. She is tied for fifth in career games started, having been in the lineup for 115 of the Falcons' 116 games since she arrived on campus. Lambert is 21st in school history in scoring. And, she leads the MAC and is 16th in the nation in minutes per game (37.13).
• Sophomore Angela Perry has 9.7 ppg and is shooting 50.6% from the floor. She has three 20-point games this year to date.
• Freshman Kadie Hempfling and sophomore Madisen Parker have 6.3 and 5.2 ppg, respectively. Hempfling averages a BG-best 8.0 rebounds per game, and she has dished out 4.0 assists per game to pace the Falcons in that category as well.
• Parker has gone 34-of-90 (37.8%) from three-point land, including a perfect 3-for-3 on three occasions this season. She made all three of her long-range attempts en route to a career-high 13 points in the first Miami game, then was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the win over Buffalo.
• In MAC games only, three Falcons are scoring in double figures. Cecil leads the team with 16.6 ppg, while Lambert has 11.7 ppg, McMillen 10.6 and Perry 7.9. Hempfling has 6.4 ppg, while senior Maddie Cole has 5.4 ppg in conference contests, and is shooting an even 50% (36-of-72) from the floor in the 16 games.
• BGSU returned a total of 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team that finished with an 11-19 overall record and a 3-15 mark in MAC play.
• A total of 10 different Falcons have made at least one start this season. Cecil is the only player to have started all 27 games.
SEE THE THREE, BE THE THREE
• The Falcons are currently ranked 20th in the nation in three-point field goals made per game, having hit 8.9 shots from beyond the arc per contest.
• And, BGSU is 27th in the land in total three-pointers made (239), 36th in treys attempted (678) and 48th in long-range accuracy (35.3%).
• BGSU has made at least three triples in each of the last 70 games.
• Individually, freshman Morgan McMillen is 24th in the country in three-pointers made per game (3.00), and she is 29th nationally in both three-pointers made (81) and attempted (220). McMillen has made at least four treys in a game 13 times this year.Â
• Junior Andrea Cecil falls just shy of meeting the NCAA minimum; otherwise, she would rank 26th in the entire nation – and first in the MAC – in three-point percentage. Cecil has hit 41.9 percent of her long-range tries.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY: 1,000-POINT SCORER NOW RESIDES IN BGSU'S TOP 25
• Senior Sydney Lambert scored her 1,000th career point on Dec. 30, becoming the 28th player in school history to reach that milestone. Lambert achieved that feat in her 100th career game at BG. She has averaged at least 9.4 points per game in all four years, and is averaging 11.5 ppg this season and 10.2 ppg in her BGSU career.
• In Saturday's win over Kent State, Lambert moved past Andrea Nordmann (1,164 points from 1989-93) into 21st place on the BGSU career scoring list. Lambert currently has 1,177 career points as a Falcon. Her next target is 20th-place Jacki Raterman (1,213 points from 1995-99).
LAMBERT'S LEGACY II: START ME UP
• Senior Sydney Lambert started each of BGSU's first 108 games after joining the program. She missed her first-ever game on Feb. 6, when she did not make the trip to NIU due to injury. Lambert returned to the lineup for the first Miami game (Feb. 9), and has been back in the lineup ever since. Lambert now has started 115 career contests, tied for the fifth-highest total in BG history.
• If Lambert is in the starting five on Wednesday at UB, she would pass Jackie Motycka (115 from 1985-89) and move into sole possession of fifth. Kate Achter (124 from 2004-08) holds down the fourth-place spot on the BG list for career starts.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY III: SYD-THREE LAMBERT
• Senior Sydney Lambert enters the Buffalo matchup having made a total of 230 three-point field goals in her career. With a triple in the first NIU game (Jan. 16), she moved past BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Honegger (216 three-pointers from 2003-07) into sole possession of third place on that list.
• Lambert is averaging exactly two treys per game in her career, and has a chance to pass Tracy Pontius (235 from 2007-11) and finish her career in second place on the BGSU list. Lauren Prochaska (who, like Pontius, terrorized the MAC from 2007-11) holds the school record with 310 career triples made.
EYASSES (IT'S THE PLURAL OF EYAS) (LOOK IT UP)
• It's a youthful group that has taken the floor for the Falcons this season. A total of six players have seen action in at least 26 of BGSU's 27 games this year to date. That sextet includes one senior, one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen.
• The group that has emerged as the top-nine players in Coach Robyn Fralick's rotation consists of three frosh, three sophomores (including one redshirt soph), one junior and a pair of seniors.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BULLS
• Buffalo is 19-8 overall and 11-5 in MAC play. The Bulls have won the last two games, including an 86-61 dismantling of Miami on Saturday, and UB is a game behind MU and Ohio in the East Division. The Bulls are 8-3 at home and 9-5 on the road this season. Cierra Dillard is second in the nation in scoring, with 25.5 points per game. Dillard leads the country in free throws made, and is also ranked among the national top-20 in assists, steals and three-pointers per game. Coach Felisha Legette-Jack welcomed back nine letterwinners, including two starters, from a 2017-18 team that went 29-6 overall and 16-2 in the MAC. Last year's club advanced to the championship game of the MAC Tournament, then advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships before losing to South Carolina.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 26-14, in the all-time series between the teams, and BG snapped UB's three-game series winning streak with a 78-72 victory at the Stroh three weeks ago (Feb. 13, 2019). Last year, UB captured both games from the Falcons, including a 74-38 decision at Alumni Arena on the final day of the regular season (March 3, 2018). BGSU is 12-6 at home, 13-8 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites vs. UB over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the UB game, the Falcons will end the regular season with Saturday's (March 9) game at Ohio, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
• Then, the MAC Tournament begins with first-round matches on Monday, March 11. BGSU will hit the road to face an opponent to be determined.
