BG's slate highlighted by Crew S.C. Spring League action
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team opens the Spring 2019 schedule this weekend. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons hit the road for a Saturday afternoon (March 9) matchup vs. Cleveland State.
That CSU match is also BGSU's first game in the Columbus Crew S.C. Spring League.

The Crew S.C. Spring League consists of two groups of four teams. Each team will play the other three teams in the group, and all eight teams will converge upon Columbus on April 14, where the coinciding seeds will match up (the first-place team in the Gold group plays the first-place team in the Black group, second-place Gold group team plays second-place Black group team, etc.).
BGSU is in the Gold group along with CSU, Dayton and Purdue Fort Wayne. The Falcons will host the Flyers (March 30) and Mastodons (April 6) on back-to-back Saturdays.
"It is always good to start playing games in the spring, as the guys are tired of playing against themselves by this time," said Nichols. "But, this year is particularly exciting with the new competition.
"The Crew S.C. Spring League was created to give our athletes something more to play for in the spring. The fall is still the championship season, but now there is a trophy to play for in the spring, which should bring a bit more intensity and passion to these games."
Â
Following BGSU's group-play matches vs. CSU, UD and PFW, the Falcons will head to Columbus, as mentioned, to meet a team to be determined on Sunday, April 14. BG will face a program from the Black group, which consists of Cincinnati, Marshall, Northern Kentucky and Ohio State.
BGSU will play a home match under the lights when Tiffin comes to Cochrane Stadium on Friday, April 19. Then, a veritable plethora of former Falcon men's soccer standouts return to town on Saturday, April 27, for the team's annual Alumni Match.Â
The Falcons will likely add one more home match to the spring schedule in the near future. For the latest, most up-to-date schedule, click the link near the top of this page.
BGSU ended the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in Mid-American Conference play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney. The Falcons have finished second in the league twice in the last three seasons. BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
