Detroit downs BG in non-conference doubleheader
A pair of pitcher's duels went the home team's way on Tuesday afternoon (April 16), as the University of Detroit Mercy picked up two wins over the Bowling Green State University softball team. The Titans captured the non-conference doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark by scores of 2-0 and 4-0.
Seniors Meredith Miller and Brooke Parker each had solid starts for the Falcons (16-25), but Liz Murphy and Ashley Mauser each fired a complete-game shutout for the Titans (21-22). Murphy limited the Falcons to two hits in the opener, while Mauser pitched a three-hitter in the nightcap.
Miller allowed a two-run home run to Kori Keyes in the first inning of the first game, and after surrendering a leadoff double in the second, the BG senior allowed only one more hit the rest of the way.
The second game was a one-run contest through five and a half innings, before the Titans pushed three more runners across the plate in the sixth.
Sophomore Payton Hamm had two hits in Tuesday's second game, while classmate Nikki Sorgi reached three times on the day, with a single in the opener and a pair of walks in the nightcap.
BGSU-UDM GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sophomore Taylor Blevins was hit by a Liz Murphy pitch with one out in the first, and promptly stole second. But, Murphy got a grounder back to the circle, with Blevins forced to hold at second base, and a fly ball ended the inning.
• The Titans got a one-out hit off the bat of Jordan Manno in the bottom of the first, and Kori Keyes followed with a homer to left-center, which would prove to be all of the game-one scoring. McKenna Tanguay then singled, before senior Meredith Miller struck out each of the next two Titans.
• Leena Mortensen doubled to lead off the second inning, and Keyes reached on an infield error in the third. Keyes would wind up stealing third, but in each case, Miller retired the side without the hosts adding to the lead.
• Murphy worked a pair of one-two-three innings before sophomore Nikki Sorgi reached on a bunt single with one out in the fifth. A fielder's choice, however, produced the second out, before second baseman Alyssa Lang was able to snare sophomore Payton Hamm's liner.
• In the home fourth, Lang led off with a double, then took third on a wild pitch with one down. But, Miller proceeded to throw a third strike past Taylor Gauthier, then grabbed a Sydney Pollock popup herself.
• The only UDM runner over the remainder of the game came when Manno walked in the fifth. But, BG's only baserunner the rest of the way came on a Blevins single with two down in the sixth, and a grounder to second retired the side.
• In the seventh, Kellie Natham led off with a flare to shallow left, but it was grabbed by charging leftfielder Tanguay, and Murphy recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close out the win.
BGSU-UDM GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nikki Sorgi walked with two down in the first, and BG got a Hamm single up the middle to begin the second inning. Sophomore Sarah Gonzalez also walked in that second frame. But, a ground ball ended the first after Sorgi's hit, and a caught stealing helped get the Titans out of the second.
• In the third, senior Alex Sorgi singled with one down. But, a fielder's choice and another caught stealing ended the frame.
• Senior Brooke Parker retired the first six batters she faced, without allowing a ball out of the infield. Ellie Boteller singled up the middle to begin the third, however, and after Parker struck out the next batter, pinch-runner Maggie Hampton stole second, and Gauthier reached on a bunt that put runners at the corners. Courtney Gilbert singled to left to score Hampton with the game's first run.
• Parker responded by getting Manno to pop up to Gonzalez at short, but a double steal put runners at second and third. On that play, Gauthier was ruled safe on a bang-bang play as Gonzalez slapped a tag on her from behind But, third baseman Madeline Dyer grabbed a Keyes liner for the third out.
• In the fourth, Nikki Sorgi led off with a walk – after a visit to the circle with the count at 3-0, and the subsequent ejection of a UDM coach. Natham's sacrifice bunt moved Sorgi to second, but two infield outs retired the side with the score still 1-0.
• Parker retired the side in order in both the fourth and fifth innings, but UDM starter Ashley Mauser returned the favor each time.
• Gilbert led off the UDM sixth. After an inside pitch, the leadoff hitter turned and told the ump that the pitch had hit her. He agreed, and the Titans had a baserunner. Then, Manno singled through the left side as shortstop Gonzalez broke to cover second in the event of a steal attempt, and the subsequent ground ball went directly through the vacated area. Keyes drew a walk to load the bases, and Tanguay's slow roller was just out of Parker's reach. Second baseman Nikki Sorgi fielded the ball, but her only play was at first base as Gilbet scored the Titans' second run of the game.
• Lang followed with a double off the wall in center. Just one run scored on the play, as the runners had to hold to make sure the ball wasn't caught.
• Another walk loaded the bases, and Madison French entered the game for the Falcons. The sophomore retired both batters she faced, getting Boteller to hit a roller to the right side before striking out Liz Paver. A run scored on the Boteller ball, however, giving the hosts a 4-0 lead.
• BG put a pair of runners aboard in the seventh inning. Hamm singled with one out, and after a fielder's choice produced the second out at second base, pinch-hitter Kendyl Wheeler was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. But, another grounder resulted in a game-ending force at third.
