BGSU Tennis Sweeps MAC Player Of The Week Honors
April 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Polina Radeva and junior Ayumi Sasaki of Bowling Green State University's tennis programs were named MAC Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week, as well as senior Paula Comella being named MAC Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week  announced Wednesday (April 17) afternoon.
SINGLES
Against Miami, Comella bested Brindtha Ramasamy, who is ranked second in the MAC for singles by r2sports.com, in three sets. After falling in the first set 6-4, Comella stormed back to take the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-2 respectively. The win tied the match at three between the Falcons and RedHawks, giving BGSU the opportunity to upset the MAC leaders. In the end, the RedHawks escaped with a 4-3 win.
Last season, Comella was named MAC Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 28 following wins over Notre Dame and Detroit. This is the first time this season that Comella has been named for singles play, but she was named twice previously for doubles play (Feb. 27, March 27) with Marharita-Sophia Tavpash.
DOUBLES
Over the past weekend, Radeva and Sasaki picked up a win in their lone doubles match. Playing No. 2 doubles, the duo topped Miami's Kalita and Myers by a score of 6-2. The win clinched the doubles point for the Falcons, giving them an early 1-0 advantage against MAC leader, Miami.
This is the second time this season that Radeva and Sasaki have won the award together. The duo won last week as well, giving them back-to-back MAC Doubles Team of the Week awards. Sasaki was also recognized earlier in the year on Feb. 13, with Marta Bettinelli following a 2-1 weekend at No. 3 doubles that included wins over Saint Louis and Cleveland State. Last season, Radeva and Sasaki won MAC Doubles Team of the Week after earning wins over Chicago State and Xavier at No. 2 doubles. As a team, this is the fifth time BGSU has had a doubles duo recognized as MAC Doubles Team of the Week.
The Falcon tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, April 21 when BGSU hosts Western Michigan at 1 p.m. with location being weather dependent. The match will be Bowling Green's final regular season match and will serve as their Senior Day. The Orange and Brown are currently 9-10 on the season, 2-4 in the MAC.
