BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Western Michigan University by a score of 5-1 on Friday (April 19) afternoon. The Mid-American Conference series opener was played at Steller Field on a chilly and overcast afternoon.
Â
Bowling Green starter Andrew Abrahamowicz grinded out 6.0 innings of solid baseball. The only damage against the sophomore was a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. WMU's Blake Dunn, the MAC's leader in batting average, delivered the clutch hit that gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Â
WMU went on to score three big insurance runs in the top of the ninth to take the game away from the Falcons. Abrahamowicz scattered six hits while striking out five and walking two.
Â
Bowling Green and Western Michigan each had 11 hits, but the Falcons left 11 runners on base. WMU moves to 12-22 (5-6 MAC) on the season with the win, while BGSU drops to 12-21 (5-8 MAC) in 2019 with the loss.
Â
The Falcons quickly took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Jake Wilson got things going with a two-out single. After Tyler Haas worked a walk, Neil Lambert delivered a single into right field to get Bowling Green on the board.
Â
Wilson, Haas and Ryan Johnston registered two hits apiece for the Orange and Brown. Bowling Green also received hits from Lambert, Mike Malewitz, Riley Minorik, Anthony Smith and Dylan Dohanos.
Â
The series is set to conclude with 1:05 p.m. ballgames on both Saturday and Sunday, but fans are encouraged to follow along online (BGSUFalcons.com) and on Twitter (@BGSU_Baseball) for potential weather-related changes. A storm is expected to be in the Bowling Green area throughout Friday evening and into Saturday.

COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"Our guys played really hard today, and that's the frustrating part. I thought Andrew Abrahamowicz really competed and gave us a chance to win. We just can't get that extra hit or that big hit right now. We have been in all of these games, and just need to find a way to get over the hump."
