Gustafson Named Outstanding Field Performer; Three Falcons Named All-Conference
May 13, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – Redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson was named the Mid-American Conference's Most Outstanding Field Performer and three Falcons were named All-Conference following the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend. Gustafson and Kaila Butler were named to the first team, while Rachel Walny earned second team honors.
Gustafson picked up the Most Outstanding Field Performer award for the third time in her career – twice during the outdoor season and once during indoor. She won the MAC shot put championship for the fifth time, throwing almost five feet further than her nearest competitor. Gustafson was also a third-place finisher in the hammer throw and took home seventh place in the discus. A six-time MAC champion (adding a weight throw MAC title during the 2018 indoor season), Gustafson is a first team All-American and a four-time national qualifier.
Butler, just a redshirt sophomore, won the MAC Championship in the hammer throw with a distance of 209-feet-9, more than 12 feet further than any other competitor. She is ranked in the top 20 nationally in the event and will qualify for her first NCAA East Region preliminary round appearance.
Redshirt senior Walny placed second at the MAC Championships in the 10,000 and third in the 5,000. It was her third MAC runner-up in the 10,000 and her highest career finish in the 5,000. Injured much of the outdoor season, Walny ran a season-best in both events to spark the Falcons in her final MAC Championship appearance.
