Senior CF earns all-conference second-team accolades
Bowling Green State University softball standout Alex Sorgi has been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Team. Sorgi, a senior centerfielder, has earned all-conference second-team honors.
The All-MAC Teams and specialty award winners were announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon (May 7).
Sorgi, a native of Shelby Township, Mich. (Henry Ford II), started all 51 games this season, and started all 159 of the Falcons' games over the last three years. She hit .322 this year, good for second on the team, and led the 2019 club in at-bats (174), runs (34), hits (56), triples (three), total bases (66), walks (21) and stolen bases.
Sorgi leads the MAC with 30 stolen bases, the third-highest single-season total in school history. She also had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 63 chances in the field, including seven outfield assists.
In MAC games only, Sorgi batted .365 to lead the Falcons by a wide margin. She had a team-leading on-base percentage of .440 in conference contests, and also paced the Orange and Brown in at-bats (74), runs (15), hits (27), walks (10) and steals (12) vs. league foes. She led the entire MAC in the latter category, going 12-for-13 in stolen-base attempts in conference games.
Sorgi, the team's leadoff hitter for nearly every game in 2019, reached base in 36 of 87 opportunities (.414) when leading off an inning. She batted .341 (14-of-41) with two outs and .387 (12-of-31) with runners in scoring position on the year.
Sorgi led the Falcons with a total of 16 multiple-hit games in her senior season, including a pair of three-hit outings and one four-hit contest. She had an eight-game hitting streak and a 16-game reached-base streak during the year.
She tied the school single-game record -- a record she already shared -- with four stolen bases vs. Akron in late April at Meserve Field.
Sorgi's 2019 stolen-base total, as mentioned, is the third highest in BGSU history. She owns three of the top 10 spots on the BG single-season list for stolen bases.
She ended her BGSU career ranked second all-time in career steals, with 73. Sorgi also ranks among the top-12 Falcons in school history in career runs scored (117, T-fifth), walks (62, T-eighth), batting average (.314, ninth) and hits (169, 12th).
The Falcons finished the 2019 campaign with an overall record of 22-29, and BGSU wrapped up MAC play with a league mark of 7-14. Sorgi was one of seven seniors on the BGSU roster.
