Sorgi earns the honor in her first season of eligibility for the award. She will now see her name placed on the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team ballot.
Sorgi is the first Falcon to be named to the team since Briana Combs earned second-team honors in 2017 She is the first BGSU softball player to earn Academic All-District® honors in eight years, since Hannah Fulk in 2011.
Sorgi, a native of Shelby Township, Mich. (Henry Ford II), started 10 games as a freshman in 2018, but blossomed into one of the Falcons' top players in 2019. She played in 49 of BGSU's 51 games this spring, making 47 starts, and finished third on the team with a .311 batting average.
Sorgi finished second on the team with a total of 42 hits, and tied for second on the Falcons in both runs batted in, with 25, and slugging percentage (.459).
A total of 14 of her hits went for extra bases, as she had 11 doubles to tie for second on the team in that category, and homered three times. Sorgi had 62 total bases and a .405 on-base percentage, ranking among the top-three Falcons on each of those lists as well.
Sorgi tied for second on the club with 11 multiple-hit games, including a team-leading four three-hit contests, and she was second on the team with seven multi-RBI games.
Sorgi started 47 of the Falcons' final 48 games of the season, making one start at the designated-player spot, one at first base and 45 at second base. She started all 21 of BGSU's MAC games at second.
In the classroom, Sorgi is a health science major with a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average at BGSU.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The NCAA Division I teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early June.Â
