A School-Record 11 Falcons Land on Academic All-MAC Team
June 11, 2019 | Softball
The lengthy list includes Blevins, Everett, Gonzalez, Hamm, Holcomb, Miller, Natham, Parker, A.Sorgi, N.Sorgi & Wheeler
A school-record 11 members of the Bowling Green State University softball team have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, announced by the league office on Tuesday morning (June 11). Seniors Kali Holcomb, Meredith Miller, Kellie Natham, Brooke Parker and Alex Sorgi, juniors Taylor Blevins, Logan Everett and Kendyl Wheeler and sophomores Sarah Gonzalez, Payton Hamm and Nikki Sorgi all were named to the team.
Parker and Alex Sorgi each were named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the third time in their respective BGSU careers, while Blevins and Wheeler each earn the honor for the second time in as many years of eligibility for the award.
BGSU's total of 11 honorees to this year's Academic All-MAC Team ranked second in the MAC.
And, the Falcons' total of 11 student-athletes named to the squad this season breaks the school record of nine such honorees in 2017. BGSU had seven student-athletes earn Academic All-MAC honors in both 2002 and 2015, with six Falcons making the team in 2016 and '18. If the current criteria had been in place in 2011, the Falcons would have had eight student-athletes named to that year's team.
The Academic All-MAC team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in both athletics and academics. To qualify, said student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
From the list of Academic All-MAC Team members, the conference's faculty athletic representatives will select the 'best of the best' to be honored with the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2018-19 academic year. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever is greater, and a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 to be eligible for consideration. The list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes is expected to be announced sometime in the next few weeks.
The Falcons finished the 2019 campaign with an overall record of 22-29, and BGSU wrapped up MAC play with a league mark of 7-14. The Orange and Brown ended the season with five wins over the final seven games.
