Hockey Is For Everyone: Llew Ncwana
January 16, 2020 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey program will be hosting "Hockey Is For Everyone" night this coming Saturday (Jan. 18) against Minnesota State with a 7:07 p.m. puck drop. Ahead of the festivities, we are highlighting past Falcons, with a spotlight on Head Coach Ty Eigner's teammate and roommate, Llew Ncwana.

Â
Over four seasons with Falcon Hockey, spanning from 1988-1992, Ncwana earned a spot as a regular on the ice, appearing in 126 games while sporting the Orange and Brown, including 39 of the 40 games played during the 1990-91 season. Splitting time as a forward and a defensemen, Ncwana netted 13 goals while recording 25 assists for a total of 38 points with Bowling Green. After his time skating with the Falcons, Ncwana went on to play professionally, spending a season with the Thundery Bay Thunder Hawks, Fargo-Moorhead Express and Hampton Road Admirals before settling in for three seasons with the Thunder Bay Senators.
Â
When asked about his time with Bowling Green, Ncwana reflected saying "I will never forget my time at BG. Being a part of a historic college hockey program was only made more special by the coaches and players I had the pleasure of playing with and for."
Â
Prior to arriving at Bowling Green, Ncwana was introduced to the sport of hockey at a young age, as it was nearly a right of passage in the neighborhood he grew up in. Even with a love for the sport, it wasn't until the high school level, playing at Notre Dame Academy in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, when his peers began receiving offers that the thought of playing at the next level seemed attainable.
Â
However, it was at Bowling Green that Ncwana claims to have had the best four years of his life, sharing the ice with players such as Brian Hozlinger, Dan Bylsma, Ty Eigner and more while being coached by Jerry York. In addition to an incredible staff and team, Ncwana was overwhelmed by the amount of love he received from every aspect of the program while with the Falcons.
Â
When asked about Ncwana, Coach Eigner recalled their shared time on the ice, saying "When Llew and I were teammates, hockey was not as diverse as it is today, as a minority, Llew had a bunch of adversity during his career and he handled it really well."
Â
In just the last 15 years, the list of minority hockey players to suit up in the Orange and Brown has continued to grow, adding names such as Jose Delgadillo (2012-2016), Dajon Mingo (2012-2015), Jordan Samuels-Thomas (2009-2011) and Todd McIlrath (2006-2008).
