Underclassmen Power Falcons Past Toledo In Dominating Fashion, 79-57

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team won 9-of-13 events and the Falcons dominated rival Toledo in the annual Battle of I-75, 79-57, Friday night at Perry Field House. In 11 of the 12 individual events, BGSU's top finisher was a freshman or sophomore, with six of those performances coming from first-year student-athletes.
Bowling Green had a pair of double winners and both of those were freshmen. Jemeila Hunter won the 60 and the 200, while Destiny Fernandes won the 60 hurdles and high jump.

SWEEPING THE MEDALS
- Bowling Green took the top three spots in three events, the 60, 200 and weight throw.
- Freshman Jemeila Hunter won both the 60 and 200, establishing collegiate personal bests with times of 7.70 and 25.23.
- Sophomore Iyanna Ross also placed in the top three in both of those events. She tied her personal best in the 60 at 7.82 seconds and was third in the 200 at 25.81 seconds.
- In the weight throw, redshirt junior Kaila Butler, an outdoor All-American in the hammer throw, easily won with a distance of 66-feet-7 (20.29m) – her second-best performance of her career.
- Redshirt freshmen Katie Seyfang and Kaylia Black, a Cincinnati transfer, finished second and third.
OTHER WINNERS
- Freshman Destiny Fernandes won a pair of events, taking home the title in the high jump and the 60 hurdles. Fernandes competed in five events on the evening. She established a personal best in both the high jump at 5-feet-3 (1.60m) and the 60 hurdles at 9.22 seconds.
- Jazzlynn Gaiters cruised to victory in the 400 with a time of 58.60. She was also part of the winning 1600 relay team.
- Sophomore Ebonie Whitted posted an indoor personal best in the shot put with a distance of 48-feet-10 (14.88m). Teammate Katie Seyfang was second and Kaylia Black was fourth.
- In the long jump, redshirt sophomore Brianna Richard leaped 17-11.75 (5.48m) to pick up the victory.
OTHER STRONG PERFORMANCES
- Redshirt freshman Katerina Shuble finished second in both the 800 and the mile in her first indoor collegiate meet. She ran 2:19.27 in the 800 and 4:58.65 in the mile.
- True freshman Kailee Perry was the second-best Falcon finisher in both of those events as well. Her time of 2:19.84 was less than a second behind Shuble in the 800.
UP NEXT
- Bowling Green will compete in the Spire Midwest Open Friday and Saturday before a week off to focus on the stretch run of the indoor regular season.
