BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, despite shooting 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field, grinded out a 66-64 victory over Northern Illinois University on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon. The Mid-American Conference contest was played inside the Stroh Center. The Falcons have now won four-straight games.
The Falcons, after dropping their league opener, are now 4-1 in the MAC and own a share of first place. Akron and Ball State are each 4-1, as well. Bowling Green moves to 13-5 overall with the win, while NIU drops to 9-9 (2-3 MAC) with the loss.
Bowling Green has won 13 of its first 18 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1948.
With the score tied at 60-60 with 49 seconds to play, senior guard Dylan Frye nailed a deep three-pointer in the far corner. After a BGSU stop on the other end, redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner was fouled. Turner hit both with 29 seconds remaining to inch the lead up to five points at 65-60.
NIU's Noah McCarty answered with a layup inside with 16 seconds to go. Frye then split at the line with eight seconds to play, giving the Falcons a two-possession lead at 66-62. Northern Illinois made a jump shot as time expired to conclude the game's scoring.
Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding, as he finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Frye (14 points) and Tayler Mattos (11 points) also scored in double figures for Bowling Green.

BGSU also went 21-of-24 in a win over Fairmont State on Nov. 15, 2019. Bowling Green went 23-of-30 (76.7 percent) in an overtime victory against Cincinnati on Nov. 24, 2019.
• Bowling Green's bench outscored the NIU bench by a 14-6 margin. The Falcons had more second-chance points (18-8) than the Huskies.
PLAYER NOTES
• Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden posted his sixth double-double of the season, as he finished with a team-high 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Plowden has registered seven double-doubles as a Falcon.
• Entering the season, Plowden had one double-figure rebounding game in his career, and 15 career games with 10-plus points. The native of Philadelphia, in 2019-20, has scored in double figures 13 times. Plowden has pulled down 10-plus rebounds in nine games this season.
• Plowden has scored 240 points this season in 18 games. Last season, he scored 234 points in all 34 games. As a freshman, Plowden scored 154 points in 32 contests.
• Senior guard Dylan Frye scored in double figures for the 70th time in his career, as he finished with 14 points. The Miami native also added two rebounds.
• With his 14 points, Frye surpassed A'uston Calhoun (2009-13 | 1,337) on BGSU's all-time scoring list. Frye now ranks 19th all-time. He has scored 1,346 points in 115 games.
• Frye continues to close in on John Reimold's (2002-05 | 228) three-point record. Frye has made 221 triples as a Falcon, and needs just eight more makes to break the school record. Frye drilled one three-pointer in the contest.
• Sophomore center Taylor Mattos scored an efficient 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting. The big man also had eight rebounds and a career-high two steals. Mattos' 11 points marked the third double-digit scoring night of his career.
• Sophomore guard Caleb Fields was matched up with the MAC's leading scorer in Eugene German. German scored 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting. Fields finished the ballgame with seven points and four rebounds.
• Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner contributed with five points and four rebounds. Junior forward Trey Diggs (6 rebounds) and redshirt-sophomore forward Matiss Kulackovskis (1 rebounds) each scored five points, as well.
• Senior guard Michael Laster led the Falcons with a plus-nine court rating. Laster, after having eight assists and one turnover in Tuesday's (Jan. 14) win at Western Michigan, finished with five assists and one turnover. The senior also posted two points, two rebounds and one steal.
• Redshirt-freshman center Dylan Swingle went 1-for-1 from the floor, and scored his lone bucket on a pretty left-handed hook shot. Swingle had one rebound and one assist, as well.
