Bowling Green State University Athletics

In The Nest: Stephanie Swiger
January 30, 2020 | General, Volleyball
Stephanie Swiger played volleyball at Bowling Green from 2004-07, leading the Falcons to an 82-44 record during her career at BGSU. She ranks among the top 10 in program history in career blocks and career block assists and was a two-time first team All-MAC selection. Swiger was also named Bowling Green State University's 2008 Outstanding Senior and was president of the BGSUÂ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Swiger currently serves as the Associate Assistant Attorney General in the Ohio Attorney General's office.
BGSU Athletics recently had the opportunity to ask Swiger about her time at BGSU and what it meant to her development. Her comments:
"Being a student-athlete at Bowling Green State University changed the trajectory of my personal and professional life. Not only did I grow and mature as a young adult while balancing the responsibilities of my academic and volleyball duties, but I also discovered my passion for higher education.
"I served on the Division I National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, representing all MAC student-athletes to the NCAA. In this role, I regularly met with university presidents, conference commissioners, faculty athletic representatives, professors, and student-athletes from around the country. It was eye-opening and inspiring to understand how many people were required, not just for my volleyball games to happen over a weekend, but to understand the extensive network of individuals required for a university to operate and be successful. I knew I wanted to work in this world someday.
"After graduating from law school and practicing in the public and private sector, I moved to Indianapolis to join the NCAA as an investigator in their enforcement department. I spent four and half wonderful years working with colleges and universities to detect and investigate NCAA rules violations. I often found myself interacting with individuals across the athletics community that I first met through my involvement at BGSU. In 2017, I returned home to Ohio and joined the Attorney General's Office where I am currently in the Education Section. In this role, I serve as in-house counsel for the two and four year public colleges and universities in Ohio. I have the opportunity to work across the broad spectrum of legal issues facing Ohio's higher education institutions. The work is fast-paced, fascinating, and ever-evolving. I know this is the work I was meant to do and I will always credit my time as a BGSU student-athlete as the place where my passions began."
