BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team earned a thrilling 78-76 victory over Miami University on Tuesday (Jan. 7) evening. The Mid-American Conference contest was played inside the friendly confines of the Stroh Center. The win marks BGSU's first league win of the season.
The Falcons move to 10-5 (1-1 MAC) on the campaign with the victory, while Miami drops to 7-8 (0-2 MAC). Bowling Green was down by as many as 14 points. BGSU outscored the RedHawks by a 42-31 margin over the final 20 minutes to overcome a nine-point deficit at the half.
Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by senior guard Dylan Frye's 22-point effort. Sophomore center Taylor Mattos (18 points / 11 rebounds) and junior forward Daeqwon Plowden (13 points / 12 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles in the win. Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner added 16 points.
BREAKING DOWN THE FINAL MOMENTS
• The Falcons trailed by three points with 3:02 to play. Dylan Frye hit a pair of free throws at the 3:01 mark to trim the MU lead to a single point at 70-69. Tayler Mattos then split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 70-70 with 2:46 to play.
• After a Miami bucket, Caleb Fields grabbed a huge offensive rebound and scored the layup, knotting the game at 72-72 with 2:12 left in regulation.
• Miami again took a two-point lead, but Justin Turner drew a foul on Bowling Green's ensuing possession. He then drilled both shots at the charity stripe to tie the game at 74-74 with 1:39 left on the clock.
• The Falcons then got a stop, and it was Fields again down low. The sophomore converted a tip-in layup to give the hosts a 76-74 lead with 1:04 left in the ballgame.
• With BGSU up by one point, Miami called a timeout with 12.3 seconds remaining. Fields locked up MU's Nike Sibande and blocked Sibande's shot with four seconds to play.
• Frye got the rebound and made both free throws. However, on a desperation play, the RedHawks were fouled shooting a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in the game.
• MU's Mekhi Lairy missed the first free throw. He then made the second, and missed the third on purpose. As the ball jumped off the rim, the Falcons batted the ball away as time expired.

• Senior guard Dylan Frye led all players in scoring with 22 points, marking the 16th time in his career that he's scored 20-plus points. Frye has scored 20-plus points three times in 2019-20.
• Frye went 3-for-7 from long range, and has now made multiple triples in the same game a total of 62 times in his career. Frye has made 216 three-pointers as a Falcon, and is now just 13 makes shy of breaking John Reimold's (2002-05 | 228) BGSU record.
• Frye moved into 22nd place on Bowling Green's all-time scoring list. With his 22 points, he surpassed Keith Taylor (1981-85 | 1,283). Frye has scored 1,297 points in 112 games.
• Sophomore center Tayler Mattos had a career night, as he posted the first double-double of his career. Mattos scored a career-high 18 points, surpassing his previous career high of 12 points (vs. Oakland on Dec. 7, 2019). The sophomore had 11 rebounds, as well, and has now recorded double-digit rebounds in three games in 2019-20.
• Mattos has scored in double figures twice in his career. By going 6-for-8 from the floor, he also set a career high with six made field goals. Mattos went 1-for-1 from downtown, marking the first three-pointer of his career.
• Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden posted his fifth double-double of 2019-20, as he finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Plowden has recorded six double-doubles in his career.
• Over the first two seasons of his career, Plowden had one game with double-digit rebounds. His 12-rebound effort tonight gave him 10-plus rebounds for the eighth time in 2019-20.
• Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Turner went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and is now 31-of-32 (96.9 percent) at the charity stripe in 2019-20. Turner has scored in double figures a total of 66 times as a Falcon.
• Matched up with Miami's leading scorer in Nike Sibande all night, sophomore guard Caleb Fields finished with four points and four rebounds. More importantly, Fields held Sibande to just nine points on 3-of-14 shooting. Sibande was 1-for-8 in the second half.
• Off the bench, junior forward Trey Diggs and senior guard Michael Laster finished with three points and two points, respectively. Laster also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior forward Marlon Sierra contributed with three rebounds.
