BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, in a battle between the top-two teams in the Mid-American Conference, earned a decisive 78-60 victory over the University of Akron. The critical conference contest was played in front of a raucous crowd of 2,925 fans inside of the Stroh Center.
The Falcons have clinched an automatic bye into the quarterfinals at the 2020 MAC Tournament in Cleveland. The quarterfinal game will take place on Thursday, March 12 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Both teams entered the game with identical 11-3 league records. With the win, Bowling Green reclaims solo possession of first place with just three games to go in the regular-season. The Falcons are now 21-7 overall and 12-3 within the MAC in 2019-20. With the loss, Akron drops to 21-7 (11-4 MAC). The Zips had won five-straight games and were 6-1 on the road in the MAC heading into the evening.
BGSU's 21 wins marks the most for the program in the regular season since winning 22 regular-season games in 2001-02. The Falcons have already matched their MAC win total from a season ago, as the Falcons went 12-6 in 2018-19.
The Falcons controlled the game from the jump. BGSU led by 15 points at the half. Bowling Green led by 12-plus points over the entire second half, and even built up a 21-point lead at the 15:42 mark of the second half. Akron was called for three technical fouls in the ballgame, and UA's Tyler Cheese was tossed for making contact with an official.
Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner led the Falcons with 19 points. Senior guard Dylan Frye had a huge night, as well, finishing with 16 points, six assists (one turnover) and five rebounds. Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden registered a double-double, as he finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Caleb Fields added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.

• Justin Turner moved into ninth place on Bowling Green's all-time scoring list. The redshirt-junior guard has scored 1,544 points in 91 games. On the night, Turner surpassed Len Matela (1998-2002 | 1,527) and David Jenkins (1980-84 | 1,525). Turner scored 19 points on just 10 shots, while also finishing with four rebounds.
• By going 2-for-3 from downtown, Turner moved past Zack Denny (2013-17 | 145) on Bowling Green's career three-point list. Turner now ranks eighth all-time with 147 three-pointers.
• Senior guard Dylan Frye had a huge night off the bench. He scored 16 points on just eight shots (4-of-8). He also had five rebounds, and dished out six assists while committing just one turnover. His six assists tied a season high in MAC play.
• Frye continues to add to his three-point legacy. The BGSU three-point king has made 234 triples in his career – six more than John Reimold (2002-05), who sits in second place. Frye went 3-for-7 from deep. He's made multiple triples in the same game a total of 68 times.
• Frye ranks 15th all-time in scoring at Bowling Green. He's scored 1,425 points in 122 games as a Falcon.
• Sophomore guard Caleb Fields scored 13 points, marking the 12th double-figure scoring game of his collegiate career. Eight of those efforts have come in 2019-20. Fields tied a career high with five rebounds, and tied a season high with three steals.
• Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden registered the 10th double-double of his career, as he finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Nine of those double-doubles have taken place this season. Additionally, 13 of his 14 career games with 10-plus rebounds have come in 2019-20. And 19 of his 34 career games with 10-plus points have come this season.

MAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
• Bowling Green has already clinched a top-four seed, which means the Falcons will not have to play in the first round of the 2020 MAC Tournament. BGSU has received a bye into the quarterfinals. That game will take place on March 12 inside of Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
• The Falcons can clinch a share of the regular-season title with a win at Miami on Saturday (Feb. 29). In that scenario, Bowling Green also needs Buffalo to beat Akron on the same day.
• Bowling Green also has an opportunity to clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the MAC Tournament on Saturday. In order for that to happen, the following results need to occur: Bowling Green beats Miami; Buffalo beats Akron; Ohio beats Kent State. The Ohio / Kent State game is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
