BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team defeated the University of Toledo, 85-83, in front of a full capacity crowd of 5,000 fans at Stroh Center on Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon. Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner hit a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Falcons to victory.
With its win at Toledo on Jan. 25, Bowling Green has earned multiple victories over Toledo in the same year for the first time since 1999.
The contest served as the program's annual Bill Frack Challenge game. The first-ever Bill Frack Challenge game took place on Dec. 13, 2014, which resulted in a 67-57 BGSU win over Cleveland State.
Bowling Green (18-6) sits all alone atop the Mid-American Conference standings with a 9-2 record. Every other team in the league has accumulated at least three league losses. NIU (8-3) is in second place, and is the only other team in the MAC with at least eight wins. BGSU has already locked up the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Huskies, as the Falcons beat NIU on Jan. 18.
Turner led the Falcons with 21 points, five assists and five rebounds. Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden (13 points) and redshirt-sophomore forward Matiss Kulackovskis (12 points) each finished in double figures for the Orange and Brown. All nine players that appeared in the game for BGSU scored at least five points each.
MORE LATE-GAME HEROICS
• Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden converted an extremely-difficult running floater to extend Bowling Green's lead to 69-66 with 5:50 left on the clock. Freshman guard Davin Zeigler then quickly recorded a steal, and went to coast-to-cast for the score, pushing the BGSU advantage to 71-66 with 5:19 to play.
• Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner grabbed a defensive rebound after UT failed to convert on its ensuing possession. Turner also went rim-to-rim and finished in the lane, giving the Falcons a 73-66 lead. Toledo called a timeout with 4:50 left in the second half.
• Out of the timeout, the Rockets went on a 7-2 run to cut Bowling Green's lead to two points at 77-75 with 2:11 to go in the game.
• Zeigler would step up big again, as he went to the line for a one-and-one with 1:53 left in regulation. He hit both freebies to extend the lead back to four points at 79-75.
• Triples from UT's Luke Knapke and Marreon Jackson were sandwiched in-between a layup from sophomore guard Caleb Fields. Jackson's three-pointer knotted the game at 81-81 with just 49 seconds left on the clock.
• Redshirt-sophomore forward Matiss Kulackovskis tipped in a Turner miss with 25 seconds to go. The officials originally ruled that the ball was touched in the cylinder. However, after a review, BGSU was awarded the bucket.
• Marreon Jackson answered with two free throws, tying the game at 83-83 with 14 seconds left in the rivalry contest.
• Bowling Green elected not to call a timeout. The ball was put in Turner's hands on BGSU's last possession of the game. Turner drew a foul on Toledo's Spencer Littleson with 1.2 seconds to play, and drilled both free throw attempts. Toledo was not able to get a shot off on a full-court pass from underneath the UT basket. Turner batted the ball out of Knapke's hands as time expired.
