NORMAL, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University tennis program captured the Illinois State Invitational Championship on Sunday (March 1) with a 4-2 win over host Illinois State. The win marks the second consecutive for the Falcons after they topped Milwaukee yesterday (Feb. 29). So far this spring, the Orange and Brown hold a 5-3 record with five matches remaining before MAC play begins. On the court, Ioanna Tsadari and Ayumi Sasaki each picked up two wins for the Falcons, propelling the team to the victory.

Making Of The Match

The day began with doubles as usual, seeing Kapitanova and Tsadari continue a season long trend of taking a victory in No. 2 doubles, marking the duo's fifth doubles win of the season thus far.
The Redbirds took No. 1 doubles, pushing the deciding point to No. 3 doubles where the Falcons again dominated, seeing Sasaki and Silveira win 6-1 to claim the 1-0 advantage for the Falcons heading into singles play.
The Falcons continued the momentum into singles with a quick win at No. 2 singles by Tsadari, taking the set 6-1, 6-0 to put Bowling Green up 2-0.
Tavpash then extended the lead for the Falcons with a win at No. 1 singles with set wins of 6-4 and 6-2, giving the Orange and Brown a 3-0 advantage.
Illinois State battled back to take wins at No. 5 and No. 6 doubles to draw the score to 3-2, but Sasaki closed the door on the comeback with a win at No. 4 singles to clinch the 4-2 victory and tournament championship for the Falcons.

Moving In The Record Book

With a singles win, Tavpash moved up the combined wins list all-time, now holding sole possession of 19th all-time with 129. The next step will be for 18th, currently held by Katia Babina (2007-10) with 130 wins.

"We fought and got better on every court and every match this weekend. Winning the doubles point set the tone for the rest of the match today. I'm very happy and proud of these guys for pushing on and believing in themselves."

Up Next

The Falcons will return to the court this coming Friday (March 6) to host Indiana Tech at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The match is set for a 2 p.m. first serve and will be the first of two consecutive home matches for the Orange and Brown.
