Gottshall throws her third one-hitter in as many weeks
A seventh-inning rally fell just short on Monday morning (March 2), as the Bowling Green softball team dropped a 4-3 decision at East Tennessee State. The game, part of ETSU's Buccaneer Classic, was held at Betty Basler Field.
The Bucs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first on a two-base error and a pair of fly balls, and for a long while, it looked like that would be all the scoring the hosts would need.
Freshman Payton Gottshall suffered the loss in the circle, despite throwing a complete-game one-hitter. She had a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings, before the Bucs' Kylie Toler hit a three-run homer to stake ETSU to a four-run lead.
The Falcons, down four, got the tying run to second base in the top of the seventh. After back-to-back singles by junior Nikki Sorgi and freshman Sophie Weber, senior Evelyn Loyola singled to score two runners, and a two-out, pinch-hit double by junior Sarah Gonzalez brought BG within a single run.
But, with the tying run 120 feet away, ETSU's Taylor Boling got a game-ending groundout to pick up the save.
Kelly Schmidt earned the win for the Bucs, allowing three runs and six hits before leaving with one out in the seventh.
The Falcons outhit ETSU, 7-1, on the day.
NOTEWORTHY
• Freshman Payton Gottshall threw her third complete-game one-hitter in as many weekends.
• Gottshall had nine strikeouts in her six innings of work, and now has 93 strikeouts in 60 innings this season to date.
• Freshman Sophie Weber picked up her first collegiate hit with a double down the left-field line in the second inning.
• Weber added a seventh-inning single for the first two-hit game of her young BGSU career.
• Junior Sarah Gonzalez, in her first-ever pinch-hitting appearance as a Falcon, had an RBI double in the seventh. Prior to Monday morning, Gonzalez had started all 114 of BGSU's games during her career.
BGSU-ETSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• ETSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, as Julia Fritz reached second on an outfield error and moved up a base on back-to-back fly balls, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Warren.
• BGSU freshman Payton Gottshall issued a one-out walk in the second inning, then struck out the next six batters. She retired seven-straight Bucs (the last via popup) before walking Nikki Grupp with two down in the fourth. But, Gottshall proceeded to strike out the following batter to retire the side, and she worked around a one-out walk in the fifth.
• But, ETSU starter Kelly Schmidt was firing goose eggs at the Falcons. Freshman Sophie Weber doubled in the second, and senior Taylor Blevins singled in the third, but both runners were stranded.
• Senior Logan Everett singled to begin the BG fifth, and classmate Evelyn Loyola sacrificed her to second, but Schmidt got a strikeout and a grounder to third to keep the Bucs in the lead by a run.
• BGSU was retired in order in the top of the sixth, and Warren walked and stole second with one down in the bottom of the inning. Gottshall struck out Makenna Helton for the second out, but Grupp was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners aboard, and Kylie Toler gave the hosts some breathing room with a three-run homer – again, ETSU's only hit of the entire game.
• As it turned out, the Bucs would need every one of those runs. Junior Nikki Sorgi led off the seventh with an infield single, and Weber followed with a base hit, her second of the game, to put runners at the corners.
• A groundout moved pinch-runner Montana Jones to second base, putting two runners in scoring position, and Loyola plated both of those runners with a single, taking second on the throw home.
• The Bucs went to the bullpen, and Taylor Boling struck out the next BG batter for the second out. But, junior Sarah Gonzalez followed with a pinch-hit double, switching places with pinch-runner Summer Callahan and bringing the Falcons within a single run.
• Boling, however, was able to get a ground ball to third that resulted in the final out.
• Weber, as mentioned, had the first multiple-hit game of her career, while Loyola drove in two of the Falcons' three runs.
• Toler, obviously, led the ETSU bats with her team's only hit of the day, a three-run homer.
UP NEXT
• Next weekend, BGSU will head to Florida for five games in the Clearwater Invitational (March 6-8). The Falcons' opponents in Florida include Providence, Penn State, Army West Point, Chattanooga and Seton Hall.
• BGSU is scheduled to face the Friars and Nittany Lions on Friday.
