Aug. 22 - at BGSU 3, Michigan Hawks 2
Scrimmage
The Falcons posted a win in the team's lone preseason scrimmage, besting the visiting Michigan Hawks, a club team. Freshman Jill Conover scored the lone goal of the first half. After a Hawks tally early in the second half, sophomore Desiree Erb scored a pair of goals just a few minutes apart. The Hawks scored to cut the margin to one goal, but could not register the equalizer. Freshman goalkeeper Erika Flanders went all the way in net for the Falcons.Aug. 27 - at BGSU 3, Michigan State 2 (OT)
Junior Michelle Lisy's goal at the 99:46 mark lifted the Falcons to victory in the season opener for both teams. Desiree Erb had a pair of goals as the Falcons posted the team's first-ever win over a Big Ten Conference opponent. Kim van Cleef and Becky Wilger scored goals for MSU.The Falcons drew first blood when Beth Wechsler's corner kick found Erb for her first goal of the day, just 5:52 into the match. The Spartans equalized late in the first half, when van Cleef tallied off a Libby Kelly assist. That goal, at the 41:41 mark, made the score 1-1 at halftime. Erb recorded her first career multiple-goal match when she scored at the 62:26 mark. Lisy and freshman Jill Conover drew the assists. The Spartans tied the contest just 32 seconds later, when van Cleef's pass found Wilger for the goal.
MSU goalie Mara Lee, forced to make just two saves in the first 90 minutes, made three stops in the overtime session before the Falcons got a ball past her. Wechsler's pass found Conover on the right side of the penalty box. Conover lofted a short cross to Lisy, who's far-post header beat Lee into the right corner of the goal mouth. For both Wechsler and Conover, the assists were their second on the afternoon.
Freshman goalkeeper Erika Flanders played the entire 99:46 to earn her first win. Flanders, who was not forced to make a save in the OT, made six saves in the win. Lee made five stops in net for the Spartans, who held an 18-15 edge in shot attempts.
The win was BG's first over a Big Ten team in five tries. The third-year Falcons won the season opener for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the match marked BGSU's first overtime victory since the first match in program history (August 29, 1997, at Kent).
Aug. 29 - at BGSU 5, Valparaiso 1
Freshman Susan Wallace scored the first two goals of her career as the Falcons recorded a 5-1 win over the Crusaders. Wallace also had an assist in the match, as the BG frosh combined for three goals and four assists in the win.BG broke on top with a pair of goals just 39 seconds apart. Junior Autumn Harris headed home a Beth Wechsler corner kick at the 14:40 mark, while freshman Jill Conover found the back of the net at 15:19. Freshman Melissa Galitz and sophomore Desiree Erb assisted on Conover's goal.
Wallace made the score 3-0 at the 25:42 mark, with Erb drawing her second assist of the day. Valpo's Lisa Springs scored with just 2:56 remaining in the first half. Springs knocked home a rebound of Lindsay Malecki's shot, which had hit the right post.
Junior Michelle Lisy and Wallace completed the scoring with goals 4:37 apart midway through the second stanza. Conover assisted on both goals -- her third and fourth helpers of the year -- with Wallace also assisting on Lisy's tally.
Freshman Erika Flanders made three saves to earn the win in goal. Sophomore Sarah Gawel played the last 14:10 and was not called upon to make a save. VU's Amy Cavanaugh went all the way in net, making eight stops. The Falcons outshot the visitors, 20-11, including a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.
Sept. 3 - at Georgia 1, BGSU 0
A goal by Beth Culver in the second minute of the contest proved to be all the scoring the host Bulldogs would need in a 1-0 win. BGSU held tough on the road against a team which advanced to the "Sweet 16" of last year's NCAA Tournament. The Falcons, outshot by a 19-5 margin, trailed in the shots-on-goal department, 6-2. Erika Flanders made five saves in net for the Brown and Orange.Sept. 5 - East Carolina 4, BGSU 2
at Athens, Ga.
The Falcons erased one deficit, but the second deficit was too much to overcome. East Carolina got on the board in the 33rd minute, but BG's Mandy Smith scored her first collegiate goal just 19 seconds before halftime. Jill Conover and Beth Wechsler assisted on the play. In the second half, however, the Pirates built a three-goal lead, and the Falcons could only muster one goal in response. That goal came from Conover with just over two minutes left in the match. ECU outshot BG, 17-14, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Erika Flanders had seven saves in net for the Brown and Orange.Sept. 12 - at BGSU 2, Niagara 0
The Falcons set a school-record with 46 shot attempts, but went over 80 minutes before finally putting a ball in the back of the net. Another late Falcon goal resulted in a 2-0 win over visiting Niagara. Michelle Lisy got the Brown and Orange on the board at the 82:02 mark. Lisy took a pass from Stephanie Heller in the box, made a move to shake her defender and fired the ball past NU goalkeeper Rayanne Roman. Roman made 15 saves on the afternoon.With just 31 seconds remaining in the match, Autumn Harris scored off of a Heller corner kick to complete the scoring.
BGSU outshot Niagara by a 46-4 margin. The Falcons' shot total broke the team record of 42, set in the first-ever match in program history (August 29, 1997 at Kent). The Brown and Orange had 17 shots on goal, just two off the school record in that category. All four of NU's shots were on target, with Erika Flanders making the four saves to earn her first career shutout.
The win marked the 100th career victory for BGSU head coach Tom Piccirillo. Piccirillo, now 17-25-1 in his third year at the Falcon helm, is 100-84-9 in his 11th year overall.
Sept. 15 - at BGSU 2, Kent 0
Jamie Eshleman and Jill Conover scored goals, and Erika Flanders recorded her second consecutive shutout as the Falcons opened MAC play with a 2-0 win.Eshleman gave the Brown and Orange a lead midway through the first half. On the play, Melissa Galitz took a Conover pass, split two defenders and fired a shot that eluded KSU goalie Lindsey Mitchell, but caromed off the goalpost. The ball ricocheted directly to Eshleman, who found the empty net for her first goal of the season.
The Falcons, who outshot the Golden Flashes by a 24-10 margin, did not score again until the 83:38 mark. Conover took a pass from Mandy Smith and recorded her third goal of the campaign. Autumn Harris also drew an assist on the play.
The Falcons held a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal, and Flanders stopped the only two KSU shots that were on target. The shutout increased Flanders' current streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 201:36, a new school record. Mitchell made eight saves for the Golden Flashes, who fell from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The win enabled the Falcons to tie the school record for home victories in a season. BGSU went 4-4-0 at Cochrane Field during the team's inaugural season of 1997, then posted a 4-5-1 home record last year. The Brown and Orange has been victorious in all four home tilts to date in 1999.
Sept. 18 - BGSU 3, at Northern Illinois 2
Jill Conover scored two goals, and junior Janice Mentrup's goal early in the second half proved to be the match-winner as the Falcons downed the two-time defending MAC Tournament champions.The Falcons drew first blood on a Conover goal just one minute into the first half. Michelle Lisy assisted on the play. After the Huskies' Renay DeNicolo equalized at 14:46, Conover scored again at the 38:40 mark. Mentrup assisted on Conover's goal, her fifth of the season.
NIU's Beth Johnson tied the score again at the 41:38 mark, and the teams went to halftime deadlocked at 2-2. Mentrup's unassisted goal with just 5:50 gone in the second half completed the scoring.
The Huskies outshot the Falcons, 22-17, including a 10-8 edge in shots on goal, but NIU could not solve BG 'keeper Erika Flanders over the final 39:10. Flanders made eight saves as the Falcons won for the third-straight outing.
Sept. 26 - Buffalo 3, at BGSU 0
Three goals in a span of just 3:27 broke open a scoreless match and propelled the visiting Buffalo to a 3-0 victory over the Falcons. BGSU, which lost for the first time in MAC this season, battled the Bulls to a scoreless draw for nearly 82 minutes.UB's Paula Listrani broke the scoreless tie at 81:43, assisted on a Samantha Swerdloff goal at 83:35, then completed the scoring at the 85:10 mark, off a Swerdloff feed. The Bulls scored on three consecutive shots.
UB's Jaime Adams earned the shutout, making six saves. Erika Flanders made four stops in net for the home side. The Falcons outshot the Bulls, 15-11, but UB held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
The loss marked BGSU's first home setback of the season in five outings. BG also fell from the ranks of the MAC unbeaten, dropping to 2-1 in league play (5-3 overall). Buffalo remained undefeated at 8-0-1 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Sept. 29 - Toledo at BGSU
POSTPONED - RESCHEDULED FOR OCT. 30 - 10:00 AM
The match between BGSU and UT, originally scheduled for Sept. 29, was postponed, and has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 30, at 10:00 a.m., at BGSU's Cochrane Field.Due to an accident on Interstate 75, the bus carrying the Toledo team was stuck in traffic en route to Bowling Green. Coupled with the inclement weather, it was unlikely that the teams could have played a complete match due to impending darkness, even if the UT squad had arrived in BG.
The postponement is the first in the three-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program.
Oct. 1 - BGSU 2, at Ball State 2 (2-OT)
The Falcons outshot the host Cardinals by a 32-10 margin, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie. BGSU never led in the match against the first-year Cards, despite holding a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.Ball State got on the board just 16 seconds before halftime, but BG's Jill Conover equalized with her team-high sixth goal of the year at the 53:41 mark. Janice Mentrup assisted on the goal, her first of two helpers on the day.
The Cardinals regained the lead at 68:17, but BG tied the contest less than two minutes later. With exactly 20 minutes left in regulation, Autumn Harris scored off a Mentrup feed. The teams played scoreless soccer for the next 50 minutes.
Erika Flanders went the whole way in goal, making three saves. BSU's K.D. Moreland made 11 stops. The Falcons held a 10-1 margin in corner kicks.
Oct. 3 - at Miami 3, BGSU 1
The Falcons drew first blood on a Michelle Lisy goal, but BG could not find the back of the net again. BG dominated the first few minutes of the match, and the team's efforts were rewarded when Lisy headed home an Ashley Enser cross at the 11:59 mark. Leslie Hepfinger also drew an assist on the play.The RedHawks equalized seven minutes later, then took the lead for good at the 53-minute mark. An insurance goal with three minutes left provided the final margin.
MU outshot the Falcons, 24-6, and BG had only two shot attempts in the second half. Erika Flanders made six saves in net for the Falcons.
Oct. 8 - BGSU 0, at Ohio 0 (2-OT)
The Brown and Orange battled the defending MAC regular-season co-champs to a scoreless tie at OU's Shafer Street Field. Sarah Gawel, making her first start of the season, had nine saves in net to earn her first career complete-match shutout.The host Bobcats held a 27-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The scoreless tie was the first in the history of the BGSU women's soccer program.
Oct. 10 - BGSU 3, at Marshall 3 (2-OT)
Michelle Lisy scored a pair of goals late in the second half to give the Falcons a 3-3 tie with host Marshall. Stephanie Heller scored BGSU's other goal.With the Falcons trailing, 3-1, and exactly four minutes remaining in the second half, BGSU coach Tom Piccirillo substituted for goalkeeper Sarah Gawel. Beth Wechsler, a defender, put on a goalie's jersey, and the Falcons played with an "11th attacker," similar to a "sixth attacker" in hockey. The move paid off in a big way.
The Falcons cut the deficit in half with just 3:18 remaining in the on Lisy's first goal. Melissa Galitz and Jill Conover assisted on the play. Lisy converted a rebound of a Galitz shot that had hit the crossbar.
Lisy scored again with just 26 seconds remaining. Ashley Enser and Mandy Smith assisted on the goal.
The Thundering Herd had taken the lead on Kelly Kennedy's goal with 16:27 left, then went up by two as Erin Steinke scored with just 8:43 remaining in the second half. That set the stage for Lisy's heroics. The teams battled through 30 minutes of scoreless overtime action.
The Herd outshot BG, 20-15, including a 14-8 margin in shots on goal. Gawel made 10 saves in 116:26, while Wechsler was credited with one save in her 3:34 of action in goal. Marshall's Kristina Shamel made five saves on the day.
Lisy, BGSU's career scoring leader, now has six goals on the season, tying her for the team lead with Conover. Lisy now has 33 career points on 12 goals and nine assists.
Autumn Harris and Wechsler picked up assists on Heller's goal.
The Falcons begin a three-match homestand with Friday's (Oct. 15) contest vs. Eastern Michigan. That match will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field. BGSU will end the regular season with six home matches in the last seven contests.
Oct. 15 - Eastern Michigan 4, at BGSU 2
The undefeated (5-0-2 in MAC play) Eagles scored the first three goals of the match en route to the victory. EMU led, 1-0, at the half, then scored at the 56:04 and 74:30 marks, respectively, to take the three-goal lead. Michelle Lisy's team-leading seventh goal of the year cut the margin to two goals at 77:55. Jill Conover and Leslie Buse assisted on the play.The visitors scored an insurance marker with just 6:20 left, and the Falcons could get no closer than the final two-goal margin. Ashley Enser completed the scoring by converting a penalty kick with 1:48 remaining.
The Eagles outshot BGSU, 18-13, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Erika Flanders went all the way in goal for the Brown and Orange, making five saves. EMU 'keeper Sarah Willis made four stops in picking up the win.
The match featured three yellow cards and one red card, with the Falcons picking up a single yellow.
Oct. 17 - Central Michigan 2, at BGSU 1
The Chippewas, who entered the match tied for first place in the MAC, stayed there with a one-goal win at BG. After CMU's Emilie VilleMonte opened the scoring at the 10:44 mark, Michelle Lisy tied the contest for BG with her team-leading eighth goal of the year at 21:39. Annmarie Aparo assisted on the play.The match remained deadlocked until six minutes into the second half. Central's Leah McGrath one-timed a ball past BG goalie Erika Flanders. The Falcons, who were outshot by a 16-8 count, could not get the tying goal past CMU 'keeper Aryn McCumber.
McCumber, who played the second half in relief of Beth Quiney, earned the win with three saves in a scoreless 45 minutes. Quiney made one save. For the Falcons, Flanders made six stops on the day.
The Chippewas held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Oct. 20 - Detroit 6, at BGSU 0
Gwen Kilfoy and Tanya Tiselj each had hat tricks to propell the visiting Titans to victory. Leading, 1-0, at the half, UDM exploded for five second-half goals, including a pair by Kilfoy just 37 seconds apart.The Titans outshot the Falcons by just a 16-9 margin, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Three different goalies saw action for the Brown and Orange.
Oct. 22 - at Western Michigan 4, BGSU 1
The Brown and Orange suffered a three-goal setback on the road. WMU's Katie Markey opened the scoring just five minutes into the match, and she scored again with five minutes left in the first half.Mandy Smith got BG's lone goal with 59 seconds remaining in the half, with an assist from Janice Mentrup.
The host Broncos regained a two-goal lead just six minutes into the second stanza, and added an insurance tally with 10 minutes left.
Erika Flanders made eight saves in net for the Falcons, who were outshot by an 18-14 margin. WMU held a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
The loss means that the Falcons no longer control their own destiny in the quest for a MAC Tournament berth. BGSU must defeat Toledo (Oct. 30) and hope for a pair of Kent losses against Eastern Michigan (Oct. 24) and Buffalo (Oct. 30).
Oct. 24 - Indiana 3, at BGSU 0
The Falcons' struggles continued in a three-goal home loss. BGSU could muster just two shots on goal -- by Jill Conover and Amy McIlwain -- in the setback.BGSU's best chance came just a few minutes into the match, when Conover came down the right side on a semi-breakaway. IU goalkeeper Ashley Davis made a save on the point-blank shot.
The Hoosiers, who outshot BG by a 19-6 margin, got goals by Tracy Grose, Emily Markwood and Karen Moore. IU held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Erika Flanders made six saves in the BG net. For the Hoosiers, Davis and Chrissy Heubi combined for two stops.
Oct. 27 - Ohio State 1, at BGSU 0
The Falcons put forth a solid effort, but fell just short in a one-goal loss to the Big Ten's Buckeyes. OSU's Lindsay Eckles scored the lone goal of the match at the 25:01 mark. Eckles one-timed a cross from Kiley Enmark. BGSU goalie Erika Flanders got a piece of the shot, but the ball trickled under her and into the net.The visitors outshot the Falcons, 28-6, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. Flanders made 14 saves to set a school single-match record. The 14 stops increased her seasonal and career saves totals to 88, setting school records in both categories.
Oct. 30 - Toledo 2, at BGSU 1 (OT)
The Falcons' season came to an end with a heartbreaking loss to arch-rival UT in overtime. The Rockets got on the board first, at the 26:05 mark. A Toledo pass deflected directly to Corrie Hasenjager, who one-timed the ball past BG goalie Erika Flanders. The unassisted tally was the only scoring of the first half.The Falcons, who were outshot by a 10-8 margin in the first half, dominated the second stanza. The Brown and Orange controlled the ball for most of the half, outshooting UT, 10-4, in the process. BGSU nearly got on the board with approximately 10 minutes remaining. The Falcons were awarded a free kick deep in the Toledo penalty box, when UT goalie Jen Hoffman picked up a ball passed back to her by a teammate. Michelle Lisy's quick free kick found a wide-open Jill Conover, whose point-blank shot was blocked by Hoffman.
Finally, the Falcons equalized with less than three minutes remaining. After Lisy hit the crossbar with a shot, Desiree Erb finished off a frenzied flurry by tucking the ball past Hoffman. Janice Mentrup and Lisy assisted on the goal, which came at the 87:23 mark.
BGSU's Stephanie Heller just missed the net on a shot attempt with only one second left in regulation.
In the overtime, UT had the better of the play, and Odia Jahurally gave the visitors a victory with a goal at the 97:41 mark. Amy Back, whose pass sent Jahurally in on a semi-breakaway, drew the lone assist.
For the match, BGSU held an 18-17 shot advantage, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Flanders made three saves, while Hoffman stopped eight shots for the Rockets.
