Green, O'Malley Earn MAC Player-of-the-Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Comm.) -- A pair of Bowling Green State University women's soccer standouts have earned Mid-American Conference Player-of-the-Week honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 25). Senior Taylor Green has been named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Week, while junior Payton O'Malley is the league's Goalkeeper of the Week.
Each player earns her respective honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Green, a native of Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield North), anchored a BGSU defense that allowed just six shots on goal -- and zero goals -- in 180 minutes last week. She helped the Falcons keep clean sheets in a pair of road games, a 1-0 win over Oakland on Thursday (Aug. 20) and a 0-0 draw with Cincinnati Sunday afternoon (Aug. 23). At the other end of the field, the senior scored the lone goal in the victory over the Grizzlies. Green has scored two of BG's three goals this season to date, and has helped the BG defense post three shutouts in as many matches.
O'Malley, who hails from Pittsburgh, Pa. (Chartiers Valley), played 135 of the 180 minutes in those two wins. She kept a clean sheet in the Falcons' win at Oakland, earning the 11th complete-match shutout of her BGSU career. Then, O'Malley played the second half of BGSU's scoreless draw at UC, making two tops and combining with classmate Lexi Grundler for that shutout. In the process, O'Malley lowered her school record-low career GAA to 0.83 in the two matches.
The Falcons are 2-0-1 on the season, and BGSU is unbeaten after three games for the first time in 25 years and just the third time in the history of the program. BGSU returns to Cochrane Field this weekend, hosting the University of Michigan on Sunday (Aug. 30) at Cochrane Stadium. First touch is set for 3:00 p.m., and admission is free.
