Ten-run outburst caps five-win weekend in Florida
Three players pounded out three hits apiece as the Bowling Green softball team defeated Seton Hall, 10-3, Sunday morning (March 8). The game was the Falcons' final contest in the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational.
With the win, the Falcons are now 11-6 on the year, and BGSU went 5-0 during the weekend trip to Florida.
Seniors Taylor Blevins and Logan Everett and redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees each had three hits vs. the Pirates. Blevins and fellow senior Madi McCoy scored two runs apiece, while Everett had four RBI in the win.
Dees capped a monster weekend with a homer and three RBI on Sunday.
Freshman Payton Gottshall picked up the complete-game victory, striking out five. Gottshall was the winning pitcher in all five of the Falcons' games in Florida, picking up three wins in relief.
There was constant traffic on the basepaths, as BGSU put at least two runners on base in each of the first five innings. After the Falcons were retired in order, BG put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh frame.
SAMMY. DEES.
• Redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees had a stellar weekend at the plate during the Falcons' trip to Florida. On Friday, she was a combined 5-for-6 with a walk in wins over Providence and Penn State.Â
• On Saturday, Dees reached base in all four plate appearances against Army, going 3-for-3 with a walk. She singled to begin the Chattanooga game. With that hit, she had reached base in eight-straight appearances (7-for-7 with a walk) and 11 of 12 trips to the plate.
• Dees also reached base in her next at-bat, via a throwing error, before the Mocs finally retired her in her final two trips of the day.
• On Sunday, for the third time in five games, Dees reached base in every plate appearance. She homered, singled twice and also reached base on a pair of errors.
• Dees came to the plate 20 times over the weekend. She reached base in 17 of those 20 plate appearances. Officially, she batted .667 (12-for-18) in the five games, with an on-base percentage of .700 and a slugging pct. of .944.
BGSU-SETON HALL – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons broke on top quickly vs. Seton Hall starter Kelsey Gumm. Redshirt soph Sammy Dees reached on a throwing error, and the Falcons loaded the bases on a bunt single by senior Taylor Blevins and a walk to senior Madi McCoy.
• A ground ball to the circle produced the first out on a force at the plate, but senior Logan Everett followed with a base hit that plated both Blevins and McCoy. Then, a grounder by Sarah Gonzalez resulted in an out at second, but junior Nikki Sorgi came home with BG's third run.
• The Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Janae Barracato led off with a double, and Abby Wingo singled to put runners at the corners. A Baylee Allender sacrifice fly allowed Barracato to tag and score, but freshman Payton Gottshall got a strikeout and a fly ball to left to prevent any further damage.
• BG missed a golden opportunity to increase the lead in the second. The Falcons loaded the bases with one out when freshman Greta L'Esperance was hit by a pitch and Dees and Blevins both singled. But, Gumm got a popup and a ground ball to escape the jam.
• Gottshall retired the Pirates in order in the second, and BG added to the lead in the third. Everett led off with a double and took third on a grounder. Senior Evelyn Loyola reached base on an error, scoring Everett, and after L'Esperance singled, Dees reached on another Seton Hall error that allowed pinch-runner Sophie Bosket to score BG's fifth run of the day.
• The Pirates cut the Falcons' four-run lead in half in the bottom of the third. Barracato doubled with one down, and Allender's two-run homer made it a 5-3 game. Payton Beaver doubled, and Darby Pandolfo walked, but with the go-ahead run at the plate, Gottshall struck out Hailey Arteaga.
• Sorgi singled and Everett reached on an error in the fourth, but a popup produced a double play that helped get Gumm out of the inning.
• Gottshall worked around a one-out walk in the home half of the fourth, and BG went back to work in the fifth. Freshman Sophie Weber led off with a single, and L'Esperance followed with a base hit of her own. The runners each took an extra base on an error, and Dees singled to left to score pinch-runner Summer Callahan and L'Esperance and make it a 7-3 game.
• The Pirates got a pair of singles in the next half-inning, but Gottshall then proceeded to retire the next five before allowing a one-out hit in the seventh. By then, the Falcons had a seven-run lead.
• BG put together a two-out rally in the seventh. Dees homered down the left-field line, and Blevins reached on an infield single. McCoy walked, and Sorgi reached on an error that loaded the bases. Everett followed with a base hit up the middle that scored both Blevins and McCoy.
• Gottshall allowed a hit with one down in the seventh, and a hit batter put two runners aboard with two down, but Pandolfo's fly ball to center ended the game.
• In addition to the trio of Falcons with three-hit games, L'Esperance went 2-for-4 at the plate to aid BG's 13-hit attack. Wingo was 3-of-4 and Barracato 2-for-4 for the Pirates.
• Gottshall picked up the complete-game win, allowing three runs on eight hits. She walked two batters and struck out five, throwing 81 of her 128 total pitches for strikes.
• Gumm took the loss for the Pirates, giving up seven runs (four earned) in four innings of work. Reganne Camp gave up three runs (one earned) and three hits in three innings of relief.Â

• The Falcons will participate in the Fighting Illini Tournament next Saturday and Sunday (March 14-15), facing Green Bay and host Illinois twice each in that tourney.
