#DeepFrye: Five Memorable Triples During Dylan Frye’s Career
April 03, 2020 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Dylan Frye recently finished a successful four-year career with the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team. One of the best guards in program history, Frye – along with legends Antonio Daniels and Keith McLeod – are the only BGSU players to rank top-10 in career assists and top-15 in career scoring.
During his senior year, Frye became the program's all-time leader in three-point field goals. To commemorate the milestone, BGSUFalcons.com broke down five memorable three-pointers over Frye's historic career.
Along with video footage and descriptions of the five three-pointers, below is a breakdown of Frye's career statistics, records and accomplishments.

There was a big-game atmosphere at the Stroh Center for a 6 p.m. tip on a Saturday in the early portion of the 2017-18 season. The contest, which was against FGCU, served as the annual Bill Frack Challenge game. Dunk City was riding a 10-game road winning streak, which was the second-longest active streak in the country at the time. Neither team had more than a six-point lead in the second half, and the game came down to the final shot. With the score tied at 80-80, the Falcons called a timeout with just over six seconds to play. With no one guarding the in-bound pass underneath the BGSU basket, Frye was able to catch the ball in stride. He ran into the front court and pulled into a transition triple after a right-handed crossover, drilling the shot with just 0.9 seconds left in regulation to give the Falcons a thrilling win.
"The Florida Gulf Coast shot was one of my favorite moments playing in the Stroh Center. The crowd was electric and it was a great back-and-forth game. It felt great getting a win against a school from Florida and also winning that game for my friend Malcolm Nicholas." – Dylan Frye

In what many deem the biggest game in the history of the Stroh Center, the Falcons earned a 92-88 win over the 18th-ranked Buffalo Bulls. A record-breaking crowd of 5,000 fans stormed the court after the victory, as the Falcons moved to 7-1 in league play. Frye scored a team-high 25 points, which is tied for his MAC career high. With the score tied at 63-63 with 9:58 left in regulation, Frye stole the ball, dribbled all the way down the court and made a pull-up trey in transition. The shot broke the tie and ignited a 16-8 BGSU run. Frye accounted for seven of Bowling Green's 16 points during the run. Buffalo trailed the rest of the game after Frye's three-pointer.
"This is the game for me that stands out most when I look back on Dylan's career. He was on a mission that night. That was arguably his best performance as a Falcon, and it came against a nationally-ranked opponent on a huge stage. Not to mention he was being guarded all game by UB's Dontay Caruthers and Davonta Jordan – a pair of MAC Defensive Player of the Year Award winners. He put on an offensive masterpiece, making several step-back jumpers, while also drilling three triples and scoring on a number of tough takes to the rim. I thought this specific play perfectly summed up his night. Steals the ball to start, and then the rest is just vintage Dylan Frye. He's so much fun and so lethal in transition. With how well he was playing and how much confidence he always has, I knew he was pulling up and shooting that." – James Nahikian (Assistant Director/Athletic Communications)

On a late Friday night in Cleveland, BGSU defeated Northern Illinois to advance to just its fourth MAC Championship Game in program history. Frye tied his MAC career high with 25 points, with 12 of those points coming inside the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Falcons led by 23 points at the half, but the Huskies came all the way back to the tie the game. The score was tied at 58-58 with 3:08 to play, but the Falcons went on a game-deciding 7-0 run over the next 48 seconds. Frye, who started the run with a pair of free throws, capped the spurt with a corner triple in front of the BGSU bench. Justin Turner started the play with a steal, and found an open Frye after driving into the lane.
"This shot is very emblematic of Dylan's career in that when it came to winning time he was never scared and always willing to take the pressure shot. It also illustrated his basketball IQ as he managed to find a way to get to the spot he wanted, even though every Huskie was well aware of his ability to make big shots." – Todd Walker (Voice of the Falcons)

Bowling Green was in the early stages of what turned into an eight-game MAC winning streak. Northern Illinois came to the Stroh Center on a Saturday – an NIU team that would go on to clinch a top-four seed in the MAC Tournament. The Huskies had the No. 1 defense in the MAC at the time and held the Falcons to 32.8 percent shooting for the game, but the BGSU defense also showed up, and the game was tied at 60-60 with under a minute to play. The Falcons called a timeout with 1:10 left in regulation, and ultimately had the ball under the NIU basket with 52.7 seconds left on the clock. Frye started the play on the baseline. He ran to the near elbow, but then cut back hard in the opposite direction. He brushed by a screen to give him a little bit more space, before catching the ball and firing immediately. Frye was fading out of bounds while he was shooting, but still cashed the shot with under 50 seconds to play. Frye later pushed BGSU's lead to two possessions with a game-clinching free throw.
"Dylan's shot against NIU this year was huge. NIU was one of the best defensive teams in the MAC, and we were deadlocked at 60 with under a minute to go. Both teams had a great game plan, and it was going to take a big-time shot to win. Dylan has always been incredible at setting his man up. He was a natural when it came to changing speeds and misdirection movements. As soon as I saw Dylan break back to the corner, and he had a step on his defender, I knew he was 100 percent shooting that ball. He drilled it while fading out of bounds. In that moment, he wanted the ball, he wanted the big shot, and he gave the Stroh Center life. It was one of many incredible moments in his career." – Kevin Noon (Assistant Men's Basketball Coach)

A Friday night showdown on national television, and the first meeting between BGSU and UB since the 2019 MAC Championship Game. Frye entered the game just three triples shy of breaking John Reimold's BGSU three-point record. He ended up going 3-for-4 from #DeepFrye territory. The game ended with Caleb Fields blocking a shot at the buzzer, securing a one-point road win for the Falcons. The victory was BGSU's eighth-straight, marking the program's longest MAC winning streak in 40 years. Frye's record-breaking trey came at a crucial point in the contest. After Fields and Justin Turner teamed up on a steal, Turner brought the ball up the court. After drawing the attention of multiple UB players, Turner found Frye in transition. With no hesitation, Frye pulled up for an NBA-range triple. With the make, he broke the three-point record and gave the Falcons a one-point lead with 3:54 left in regulation.
"Dylan' shot at Buffalo is one of the biggest shots of his career. During my tenure, we had never won at Buffalo and we faced a big deficit at halftime. Our entire team came out fighting in the second half. Late in the game, Justin Turner came up with a steal and was flying down the court. Buffalo had two defenders back, and everyone in the gym thought he was going to take it all the way. When he stopped and pitched it back to Dylan, there was no doubt he was letting it fly. He caught it beyond NBA range and drilled it. It was a monumental shot for him personally because he broke the school three-point record. It was also a huge shot in the game because it gave us a late one-point lead. It was big shots like this one, and continuous poise down the stretch that helped us win so many close games. Whenever we had Dylan Frye and Justin Turner playing a two-man's game down the floor, we believed good things were going to happen." – Michael Huger (Head Men's Basketball Coach)
