Wolfbauer scores twice on Senior Day as BG wins third-straight match
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored three second-half goals on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10), downing Miami University by a 3-1 final in Mid-American Conference action at Cochrane Stadium.
On Senior Day, senior Madi Wolfbauer scored a pair of goals for the Falcons (5-5-3, 4-1-1 MAC). Katie Cox had opened the game's scoring with a 57th-minute goal, her first of the season.
Wolfbauer doubled the BG lead on a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but the RedHawks (7-4-3, 4-2-0 MAC) moved back within a goal on a Kylee Beinecke PK just over a minute later.
Wolfbauer sealed the deal with a late goal as the Falcons moved past MU into second place in the standings. BGSU and Kent State are tied for second, three points behind league-leading Ohio, after Sunday's matches.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• With two goals on Sunday, Madi Wolfbauer now has team-leading totals of eight goals and 17 points this season to date.
• In her BGSU career, she now has 13 goals and 27 points in just 21 matches.
FALCONS REACT
"This was a really good performance today; a very professional performance. I thought we were well organized. They are a very good team. They were very good last season, and they are improved again. I'm really pleased with the way we took care of business, and the way we are starting to look right now. Every game we are getting a little bit better, and hopefully that continues." – Head Coach Jimmy Walker
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 10' | After a BGSU throw-in just over midfield, Nikki Cox recived a pass from Madi Wolfbauer and played a nifty through-ball in the direction of Ruby Linton. The ball split a pair of defenders but was just out of Linton's reach, and Miami goalkeeper Izzie Vaccari got there first.
• 12' | Another Nikki Cox pass sent Kennedy White into the penalty area on the right side. White cut the ball back to her left to avoid one defender, but another RedHawk got there just in time to block White's shot from approximately 12 yards out.
• 18' | Miami's Kylee Beinecke fired a shot from seemingly out of nowhere. The shot, taken from a difficult angle on the right side of the field, forced BGSU 'keeper Lili Berg to tip the ball over the crossbar, and BG successfully dealt with the ensuing corner kick.
• 19' | The RedHawks continued to test Berg, as Haley Anspach took a free kick from the corner of the field nearest to the scoreboard. Anspach put her kick on frame, and Berg tipped that shot with a leaping effort, deflecting the ball off of the crossbar before Audrey Shea knocked it out of the box.
• 20' | Off of the ensuin corner kick, Madeline Schlecht got her head on the ball, but Berg saw the shot all the way and made the stop.
• 21' | As BG looked to go on a counterattack, White was taken down approximately 25 yards from goal on the right side. Nikki Cox's free kick was hit hard, but sailed just over the bar. Cox had three of BGSU's seven shot attempts in the first half.
• 53' | After a BGSU giveaway, the RedHawks had a quality scoring chance. Anspach took the ball into the penalty area, cut back and fired a shot, but it was blocked by Rachel Muller. The ball caromed to Beinecke near the top of the 18, but Mackenzie Reuber blocked her effort.
• 56' | Jasmijn Dijsselhof hit a diagonal ball toward the penalty area. Nikki Cox got her head on the ball, flicking it toward goal, and White came racing through the six-yard box to knock it away from Vaccari as the MU 'keeper looked to grab it. However, the ball rolled over the end line for a goal kick.
• 57' | GOAL | A Miami player looked to head the ball out of the penalty area, but it went to Lacee Bethea just outside the box. Bethea hit a shot that Vaccari was able to save with a leaping effort, as the ball hit off of the crossbar and bounced down into the six-yard box. Katie Cox was the first to arrive, and the junior neatly tucked the ball just inside the right goalpost.
• 71' | GOAL | With just under 20 minutes to play, Wolfbauer was fouled on the right side of the penalty area, and a penalty kick was awarded. Wolfbauer took that kick, and blasted it past Vaccari to double the Falcons' lead.
• 72' | It wasn't a two-goal game for long, however. Only 74 seconds after Wolfbauer's goal, the RedHawks were awarded a PK of their own as a free kick sailed into a crowd of players in the box. Beinecke converted that kick, and it was a 2-1 match with 18:54 to go. But, the Falcons would not allow another shot attempt the rest of the way.
• 83' | Nikki Cox had an impressive display of ball control on the right side of the box, settling a bouncing ball and eluding MU defender Bronwen Sears with a dizzying array of moves. Cox slid the ball toward Wolfbauer at the six-yard box, and Wolfbauer hit a hard one-timer, but Vaccari was able to block the shot and beat everyone else to the rebound.
• 87' | GOAL | Cox and Wolfbauer would combine again, however, and this time, the sequence resulted in the clinching goal. Wolfbauer blocked the clearing attempt of a Miami player in the RedHawks' defensive third, then slid the ball back to the onrushing Cox. Cox took a touch, then put a return pass between two defenders. Wolfbauer ran onto the ball just outside the box, cut back to her right to elude a sliding defender, and beat Vaccari near post with just 2:50 remaining.
