BGSU enters the final week of the regular season with a shot at the title
AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored late in the first half and early – very early – in the second, en route to a 3-0 win over the University of Akron Sunday afternoon (Oct. 24). The Mid-American Conference match was held at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Nikki Cox scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with just over five minutes left in the first half. Then, Lacee Bethea doubled that lead for the Falcons (8-6-3, 7-2-1 MAC), scoring just 34Â seconds into the second half.
Mackenzie Reuber closed the scoring with a brilliant goal, a blast from the top of the 18-yard box in the 64th minute.
The Falcons outshot the Zips (3-14-1, 1-8-1 MAC), 16-7, on Sunday. Lili Berg played the first 74 minutes in goal for the Orange and Brown, sharing the shutout with Riley Moore. Both BG 'keepers had one save on the afternoon.
With one game left in the regular season, the Falcons sit in third place in the standings, just one point behind co-leaders Kent State and Ohio. BGSU still has a chance to capture the MAC regular-season crown, and a win or a tie in Thursday's (Oct. 28) match vs. Toledo would give BGÂ a top-two seed and a quarterfinal-round bye for the conference tournament. The top-six teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the MAC Tournament, with the first- and second-place teams each earning a bye into the semifinal round.
NOTE OF THE DAY – BG BOUNCES BACK
• The Falcons have a record of 32-5-1 in MAC regular-season matches over the last four seasons (since the start of the 2018 campaign).
• In matches after a loss during that time, BGSU is 4-0-1, and the Falcons have outscored opponents by a 17-0 count in those five contests.
• Three of those bounce-back contests have come on the road, and BG is 3-0-0 with a 15-0 goal differential in those three games.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY – ROAD WARRIORS
• The Falcons finish the road portion of the MAC schedule with a 5-0-0 record, and BGSU outscored the foes by a combined 11-2 in their own venues.
• Since the start of the 2017 season, the Falcons are 20-5-1 on the road against MAC opponents.
• And, since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, BGSU is 17-2-0 in conference road contests, having outscored the opponents, 50-10, in those 19 matches.
QUOTING COACH WALKER
"It was a really solid performance from our team today. It was nice to get back to scoring goals again, and it's always great to get a shutout."
"Our first half was OK, but we did not take hold of the game and possess through the midfield as well as we could. We did score a great goal to take the lead, and closed out the half strong."
"In the second half, we were very good, scoring early to put the game away. We possessed much better and were able to get some of our younger players in for some valuable minutes. We have another exciting week ahead, with everything to play for!"
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 3' | The first shot of the match, in a harbinger of things to come, was a blast by Mackenzie Reuber. Her hard shot rang off the outside of the near goalpost and bounded away.
• 8' | Nikki Cox was fouled just a few yards outside the 18-yard box. Cox took the ensuing free kick, but bent her shot just wide of the post.
• 11' | Akron's Sydney Worthy hit a turnaround shot from outside of the box after receiving a pass, but the ball rolled just wide of the far post.
• 14' | A Lacee Bethea shot from a difficult angle was blocked out of play by Akron goalkeeper Penelope Cuirinier, and after Reuber's corner kick, a Katie Cox shot was also deflected over the line for a corner.
• 15' | Off of the latter corner, the ball came out to Jasmijn Dijsselhof, who centered it to Bethea. But, Bethea's shot was blocked at the top of the 18.
• 21' | The Zips had a free kick after a foul on the Falcons just outside the penalty area on the right side. But, off of the free kick, Kennedy White headed the ball out of the danger area.
• 27' | Worthy got her head on a left-side cross and knocked the ball just over the goal line, but she was called for a foul on the play, and the match remained scoreless.
• 32' | Cuirinier made a nice diving play to break up a Maya Dean cross from the right side. BGSU stole the ball right back, and Bethea found White, but White's shot from just inside the 18-yard line was blocked by a sliding defender.
• 40' | GOAL | A Dijsselhof cross was headed out of the box by a UA defender. Madison Alberty gathered the ball, took a few touches and played a perfect diagonal ball back into the mixer. Nikki Cox got her head on the ball, nodding it just inside the far post for what would prove to be the winning goal.
• 46' | GOAL | The Falcons struck again, only 34 seconds into the second half. Isabelle Gilmore's serve was headed by a defender. The ball came toward the onrushing Bethea, who volleyed it out of the air, over Cuirinier and into the net.
• 51' | Lili Berg made a save on a shot by Aislinn Meaney on a semi-breakaway. Meaney, with a BG defender in pursuit, attempted to beat Berg to the far post, but the BG 'keeper went to the ground to make the stop.
• 61' | Bethea put the ball into the net again after a Rachel Muller serve was headed by an Akron defender, but a foul had been whistled on the Falcons just before Bethea poked the ball home.
• 63' | GOAL | Bethea won a corner kick, and off of that Dean corner, the ball was deflected to Reuber on the far side of the box. Reuber uncorked a blast, and the UA 'keeper was able to get her fingers on the ball, but could not keep it from glancing off of the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
• 76' | Riley Moore, who had entered the match less than a minute earlier, made a save on a shot from distance that bounced on the wet turf before reaching the goalmouth.
• 84' | Ruby Linton took a pass from Lynsey Spotts and hit a shot from distance, but Cuirinier made a diving save.
• 85' | The Zips' Annabel Thomas took a long pass behind the Falcon defense and poked the ball past Moore, who was forced to come off of her line. Thomas hit a shot from a difficult angle, and ball rolled just wide of the far post and out of play.
