RedHawks Top Falcons Tuesday Night
November 16, 2021 | Football
Nick Mosley and Terion Stewart combined for 161 yards on the ground, as the Falcons (3-8, 1-6 MAC) had 150 rushing yards to Miami's 119. The RedHawks (6-5, 5-2 MAC) had a 346-258 advantage in total offense.
Miami led by one score late in the first half, but Tyre Shelton's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:26 left before intermission gave the hosts a 20-7 lead at the break. Then, Brett Gabbert found Jack Sorenson for an 83-yard scoring toss on the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter.
Shelton ran for two TDs for the RedHawks, who now have a 14-game home winning streak, the fifth-longest in the country. Sorenson had four catches for 111 yards.
Mosley had a game- and career-high 90 yards on the ground for the Falcons.
FIRST QUARTER
• The BGSU defense forced the RedHawks into three-and-out drives on each of MU's first three possessions of the night, and the Falcons allowed only 18 first-quarter yards by the hosts. Miami did not pick up a first down in the opening 15 minutes.
• After going three-and-out on the first drive, the BG offense picked up a first down on the second drive, as Matt McDonald completed a 20-yard pass to Austin Osborne. The Falcons had nearly completed a 77-yard TD pass on that possession, but BG wound up having to punt.
• On the Falcons' next drive, however, Terion Stewart went 62 yards to the end zone, and Nate Needham's PAT gave the Orange and Brown a 7-0 lead.
• BG forced Miami's third three-and-out in as many possessions, but the RedHawks came up with a stop, and a blocked punt set Miami up at the BG 3-yard line. Two plays later, Kevin Davis took the ball in for a score. Demetrius Hardamon blocked the extra-point try, however, and Devin Taylor and Walter Haire combined to return the ball into Miami territory before the play came to an end.
• BG picked up a first down on the next drive before punting, and Hardemon and Karl Brooks combined for a sack on the final play of the quarter.
• The Falcons had a 115-18 lead in total offense in the opening quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• MU's first first down of the night came on the opening play of the second quarter, but the BG defense held and forced another punt. But, on the RedHawks' next drive, quarterback Brett Gabbert found Mac Hippenhammer for a 63-yard TD pass.
• On Miami's ensuing drive, the Falcon defense stiffened, and a fourth-down pass was intercepted by Deshawn Jones, Jr.
• The hosts would add to the lead on a one-yard run by Tyre Shelton, one play after a Gabbert pass to Jack Sorenson. The TD came with 1:26 left in the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• The RedHawks took a 27-7 lead when Gabbert found Sorenson for an 83-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.
• The next drive saw McDonald find Christian Sims for 20 yards on a third-and-12 play, but a sack stalled the drive.
• The BG defense held, and McDonald's 12-yard pass to Tyrone Broden was followed by Nick Mosley's 14-yard run. Mosley picked up nine more yards on the drive, but a fourth-and-1 play was stopped, giving the ball back to the home team.
• Again, the Falcon defense held, as Sy Dabney was never touched on his trip to the backfield on a third-down play, sacking Gabbert for an eight-yard loss. But, a fumble on the next drive gave the ball back to MU, and back-to-back carries by Shelton gained nine and 15 yards, respectively, with the latter play resulting in a touchdown and a 34-7 Miami lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Miami kept the ball on the ground for a nine-play drive spanning the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth. But, on fourth down, Taylor and Darren Anders combined to stop MU's Keyon Mozee short of the first-down marker, giving the ball back to BG on downs.
• The Falcons' next drive saw a 17-yard run by Jamal Johnson, passes to Broden and Sims and a McDonald nine-yard scramble. But, a fourth-down pass was broken up, and Miami took over at the RedHawks' own 41.
• For the sixth time in the game, the Falcons held MU to a three-and-out, and the Falcons picked up 62 yards on the ensuing drive before time ran out.
• Nick Mosley led the way, with a total of 56 yards on six carries on that final drive. Mosley had rushes of 26, 12 and nine yards in that span.
One play, 62-yards and Terion Stewart takes it to the house for the first score of the game!

FROM THE LOCKER ROOM
"I'd like congratulate Chuck's team, Miami of Ohio. They'll get to have a chance to win the East next week and they're bowl eligible. So, congratulations. Disappointed. We got our tails kicked up front. We started out dropping a touchdown pass and getting a punt blocked. Our immaturity and our youth showed up today and it was disappointing. Our intensity, our attention to detail, all the things that we preach didn't show up at all today and I'm really disappointed." - Scot Loeffler
