Sharps, Velasco help vanquish Valpo on Sunday afternoon
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team had an answer for every Valparaiso University run on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 5), as the Falcons downed the Beacons, 69-53, in non-conference action at the Stroh Center.
Amy Velasco and Morgan Sharps scored 17 points apiece for the Falcons (2-4), who shot 50 percent from the field on the afternoon.
Velasco scored 10 of her points in the third quarter – in the first 5:03 of the third quarter, as a matter of fact – while Sharps hit at least one three-point field goal in every quarter.
The Beacons (0-7) were led by Carie Weinman's 15 points, while Grace White added 12 and Shay Frederick 11.
Sharps and Velasco paced a BG bench bunch that outscored their Beacon counterparts, 43-12.
BGSU led by as many as nine points in the first half before taking a seven-point lead into the locker room. Velasco and the Falcons extended that lead to 17 points, the largest of the game, midway through the third period, but the Beacons bounced back.
Valpo ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run to get within four points, and Frederick's triple in the first minute of the fourth quarter made it a one-point game. Kadie Hempfling scored four-straight points for the home team, though, and after Lauren Gunn's three-pointer made it a two-point margin, the Falcons went on a 9-0 run to regain control.
After that Gunn triple, the Falcons ended the game on a 16-2 run over the final 7:29. BGSU outscored Valpo, 20-8, in the fourth period.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Amy Velasco and Morgan Sharps, as mentioned, scored 17 points apiece in Sunday's win. The duo combined to go 14-of-20 from the field.
• Sharps did most of her damage from the three-point line, going 5-for-7 from the arc in the win. Velasco picked up the bulk of her points in the paint, as she was a perfect 7-for-7 from two-point range, hitting six layups as well as a foul-line jumper.
• The duo combined for 23 of BGSU's 38 second-half points, including 15 of the Falcons' 18 points in the third quarter.
Â
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot an even 50 percent from the field, going 29-of-58 on the day. The Orange and Brown shot 56.7% after halftime, including a 64.3% (9-of-14) success rate in the fourth quarter.
• BGSU went 8-for-21 from three-point range, led by a 5-for-7 effort from Sharps.
• The Beacons shot 38.5% from the field on the day, and went 11-of-32 (34.4%) from the arc. Eight different Valpo players hit at least one three-pointer in the game.

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I thought it was a great team win. I think we saw some growth today. Valpo made a good run at us, and I loved our response. To extend the lead again, get stops and hold them to eight points in the fourth quarter shows some growth. I feel like there are still a lot of things we are learning and figuring out about our crew, but this was a good win against a good team."
FIRST QUARTER
• It was a slow-starting Sunday for both teams at the offensive end of the floor. Elissa Brett found Nyla Hampton for a three-pointer with just over 90 seconds gone, and Grace White answered with a layup for the Beacons. Those would prove to be the only two buckets in the first four-plus minutes of the game.
• Amy Velasco hit a driving layup – a harbinger of things to come – and after Carie Weinman scored for the visitors, Velasco's corner three gave the Orange and Brown an 8-4 advantage midway through the period.
• But, White and Leah Earnest each knocked down long-range shots to give the visitors a 10-8 lead. Jocelyn Tate hit a free throw at the 3:32 mark, and Kenzie Lewis spotted Morgan Sharps for a three-pointer at the top of the arc. Hempton hit a free throw, then converted a pull-up jumper in the final seconds of the quarter, giving the hosts a 7-0 run and a 15-10 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• A Lewis putback in the first minute of the period extended BG's run, and after Maya Dunson ended that run with a three-pointer, Velasco hit Zoe Miller for a layup and a 19-13 Falcon lead.
• Then, a Tate steal led to a Sharps triple on the break for a 22-13 advantage with 6:19 left before the half. Valpo's success from the arc continued, as Weinman and Cara VanKempen each scored from outside, but Brett found a cutting Tate for a layup, and after a steal by Hampton, Lewis hit Sophie Dziekan for another BG bucket and a 26-19 advantage.
• Weinman again connected from long range, but a Dzieken putback was followed by a Brett triple. White cut BG's lead to seven points with a layup in the waning moments of the period.
THIRD QUARTER
• Velasco scored on the opening possession of the second half, converting a driving layup. After White scored for the Beacons at the 8:48 mark, Velasco hit driving layups on two of the next three BG possessions, giving the Falcons an 11-point lead, 37-26.
• Moments later, after a White three-pointer, Sharps took a pass from Lewis and pulled up for a three-point shot of her own on the break. Then, with BG running after a defensive rebound, Velasco found Dziekan for a 2-on-1 layup, and after two more Velasco layups, it was suddenly a 17-point game. Valpo, trailing by a 46-29 score, took a timeout.
• Shay Frederick hit a pair of buckets to begin a 7-0 run for the visotr, and anfter Sharps answered Olivia Brown's triple with a jumper, Weinman's layup cut the BG lead to 10 points once again.
• That Weinman bucket began a 9-1 run over the final two minutes of the period, and Weinman's triple late in the period cut BG's lead to just four points, 49-45, after 30 minutes.
Â
FOURTH QUARTER
• Frederick's corner three in the opening minute of the final quarter cut the Falcons' advantage to a single point. But, Kadie Hempfling had an immediate response, hitting a reverse layup after a Brett entry pass, then getting ahead of the pack for another layup 30 seconds later.
• After a Falcon turnover, Lauren Gunn's three-pointer made it a two-point game, 53-51, with 7:29 to go. But, the Beacons would score only two more points all afternoon.
• Hempfling found a cutting Brett for a layup, and after Hempfling grabbed a defensive rebound. Velasco hung in the air for a bucket from just inside the foul line, giving the Falcons a 57-51 lead and prompting a Valpo timeout with 6:18 to go.
• Out of the timeout, BG forced a turnover, and Brett hit a second-chance layup. Then, a Sharps triple gave BG a 9-0 run and an 11-point lead with just under five minutes to go. Weinman answered with a layup at the 4:25 mark, but VU would not score again.
• Lewis hit a jumper, and Hampton fed Sharps for another trey and a 14-point lead with three minutes to go. Hampton closed the scoring with a layup, giving BG a game-ending 16-2 run.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons are home again next Sunday (Dec. 12), taking on Notre Dame College in another 2:00 p.m. start at the Stroh.
