BGSU hits the century mark for the first time in over 17 years
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team hit the century mark for the first time in over 17 years, downing Notre Dame College, 100-48, Sunday afternoon (Dec. 12) at the Stroh Center.
Freshman Amy Velasco scored a game-high 19 points – all in the first half – to pace five double-digit scorers for the (BGSU) Falcons, who improve to 3-4 on the young season.
BGSU scored 38 points in the second quarter, capped by Velasco's length-of-the-court drive and layup in the final seconds, to take a 61-23 lead into the intermission, and the hosts were never headed.
Freshman Zoe Miller scored 15 points off the bench, while senior Kadie Hempfling had 12 points in under 12 minutes of action. Sophomore Morgan Sharps and junior Elissa Brett rounded out BG's double-figure scorers, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Molly Dever added nine points for the Orange and Brown, with Madisen Parker scoring eight and Jocelyn Tate seven. Tate added a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Brett had nine boards to fall just one shy of a double-double.
The Falcons shot 65.6 percent from the field in the first half, going 21-for-32 from the floor to take that 38-point halftime lead.
Jennifer Oduho had 14 points off the bench for the visitors (6-4), while Alana Ellis scored nine points and Amil Ali-Shakir and Tamia Ridley eight apiece. Ridley added a game-high 12 rebounds.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• BGSU reached the 100-point mark for the first time in over 17 years, since the Falcons racked up 115 points in a win at IPFW (now Purdue Fort Wayne) on Nov. 19, 2004.
• The Falcons set a new Stroh Center record for points in a game. BGSU had scored 99 points in a win over Marshall on Nov. 13, 2018. That Marshall game marked Robyn Fralick's first home contest as head coach of the Orange and Brown.
• BGSU hit the century mark in a home game for the first time since a 102-69 win over Western Michigan. That victory came on Jan. 3, 1998, inside venerable Anderson Arena.
• The Falcons now have scored 100 or more points a total of 25 times in the history of the program.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a great team win. It was really rewarding to see a lot of kids impact the game throughout the afternoon. We'll learn some things about ourselves from this one. Now, we've got finals to get ready for."
FIRST QUARTER
• Kadie Hempfling's reverse layup with just over a minute gone began a 6-0 run for the home team. The visitors committed a pair of shot-clock violations in the opening three minutes of the game.
• A pair of free throws by Alana Ellis and a layup by Amil Ali-Shakir cut that BG lead to just two points, but Amy Velasco responded with a three-pointer to give the (BGSU) Falcons a 9-4 lead.
• After Lilee Carlson hit a layup just over halfway through the quarter, BGSU would outscore NDC by a 14-2 count over the remainder of the period. That run began with a Zoe Miller free throw, and after a pull-up jumper by Velasco, Elissa Brett hit a pair of shots at the stripe.
• Jennifer Oduho hit a layup for the visitors, but Brett lobbed the ball inside to Hempfling for a bucket, and Madisen Parker's three-point play gave BG a double-digit lead for the first time. Brett knocked down two more charity tosses, and Nyla Hampton stole the ball and fed Jocelyn Tate for a 2-on-1 layup and a 23-8 lead after 10 minutes.
• BG shot 61.5% (8-of-13) from the field in the opening quarter, while holding the visitors to just a 3-for-14 (21.4%) success rate.
SECOND QUARTER
• Velasco, after scoring seven first-quarter points, exploded for 12 more in the second period. She opened the scoring with a free throw, ,and a Morgan Sharps three-pointer was followed by a Sophie Dziekan second-chance layup, giving the hosts a 29-8 lead.
• NDC responded with four-straight points, but Velasco knocked down a three-point try for a 32-12 lead. Moments later, the Falcons scored six quick points on layups by Velasco, Hempfling and Parker. The latter two buckets came after steals by Tate, and all three layups came in a span of just 34 seconds.
• Tate and Velasco combined for three points at the line, and Tate grabbed an offensive rebound and fed a cutting Velasco for a layup. When Hempfling drove and scored off glass, the run was 13-0 and the lead was 48-18 as NDC used a timeout.
• Oduho hit a triple out of that timeout, but Miller answered with a layup and Brett hit two free throws, then scored off of a Velasco steal. Brett then came up with a defensive rebound and found Sharps for a transition triple and a 57-21 lead. Miller's free throws made it an 11-0 run, and after Marina Adachi knocked down a jumper, Velasco went coast-to-coast, beating the halftime horn with a layup.
• The home team went 13-of-19 from the floor (68.4%) in the second quarter, scoring 15 points off of turnovers in that period alone. BG also got to the line for 11 shots, hitting nine, in the second period.
• In addition to going 21-for-32 (65.6%) from the field in the first half, BG was 15-of-18 from the free-throw line in the opening 20 minutes.

THIRD QUARTER
• Ali-Shakir opened the second-half scoring, but Hempfling hit a pair of layups and a Brett bucket made it a 67-25 game. Ellis answered with three-straight points, but Brett threw the ball inside to Miller for a layup, and Miller then stole the ball and took it all the way downcourt herself, giving the hosts a 71-28 lead.
• Molly Dever knocked down a pull-up jumper at the 6:17 mark, and Miller then scored the next six points. When Dever took an Olivia Hill pass and drained a three-point try, the Falcons had an 82-30 lead. Oduho's layup closed the third-quarter scoring.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The visitors scored six of the first eight points of the period, with a Tate floater the only BG scoring in the first four-plus minutes. But, Sharps converted a driving layup, then knocked down a three-point try, and Dever's layup with 3:57 to go put the hosts on top, 91-43.
• Parker's triple on the next possession made it a 51-point advantage, and after Tamia Ridley hit a jumper, Tate fed Dziekan for a layup.
• Tate scored with 1:30 to go, and Dziekan, who assisted on Tate's bucket, then stole an Ali-Shakir pass. Parker found Dever for a jumper at the 58-second mark, allowing BGSU to reach the 100-point plateau.
• Miller (10) and Dever (nine) combined for 19 of BGSU's 39 second-half points.
