Redshirt freshman fires her 4th shutout in 5 starts as BGSU captures 1-0 win
ROCK HILL. S.C. – Redshirt freshman Payton Gottshall threw yet another complete-game shutout as the Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Radford University, 1-0, Sunday morning (Feb. 21). The game marked the Falcons' final contest in the Winthrop Kickoff Tournament.
Nikki Sorgi's two-out single in the fifth inning scored pinch-runner Peyton Dolejs with the game's only run. Reagan Williamson's one-out single, along with a Radford error, put Dolejs in scoring position before Sorgi brought her home.
Gottshall outdueled Radford starter Jessie Marvin in Sunday's contest. The two combined to allow just seven hits, with neither team picking up a hit until the fourth frame.
Marvin needed just 81 pitches to get through seven innings, throwing 56 for strikes. She allowed four hits, and one (unearned) run, walking two and striking out two.
Gottshall threw 76 of her 101 pitches for strikes en route to a complete-game three-hit shutout. She struck out 14 and did not walk a batter.

• As a true freshman in 2020, Gottshall had a double-digit strikeout total in four games. This season, she has had at least 13 strikeouts in each of her six games – including one relief appearance – to date.
• Gottshall allowed her first two earned runs of the spring on Saturday, but with Sunday's shutout, she lowered her season ERA to 0.32.
• Gottshall has pitched 43 1/3 innings this season. She has walked four batters and struck out 94, and opponents have batted just .099 against her in 2021.
• In her BGSU career, Gottshall has struck out 222 batters in 130.1 innings. She already ranks 13th in school history in career strikeouts, and is 32 away from moving into the top 10.
• The school record for strikeouts per seven innings (minimum 200 innings pitched) is 7.12, by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel (2003-06). In her career to date, Gottshall has struck out 11.92 batters per seven innings.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"Today was a good team win as we played a close game against Radford. Payton Gottshall was solid for us in the circle and we had some standout plays defensively, too. Offensively, we have some work to do, and we will be focusing on those adjustments this week as we prepare to play at WKU this coming weekend."
BGSU-RADFORD – HOW IT HAPPENED
• While Payton Gottshall pitched another gem for the Falcons, Jessie Marvin was nearly as good for the Highlanders. Marvin retired the first 10 batters she faced, and needed just 22 pitches to get through three innings.
• BGSU's first baserunner game when Sammy Dees walked with one down in the top of the fourth, but Marvin set down the next two Falcons.
• Meanwhile, the only baserunner Radford could muster in the first three innings came on an error in the second frame. But, catcher Evelyn Loyola and shortstop Madi McCoy teamed up to cut down that runner attempting to steal second, and Gottshall faced the minimum nine batters through three.
• RU's Sydney Fisher singled – the first hit for either team – to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and Riley Oakes sacrificed her to second. But, Gottshall got a foul pop to third base, then struck out the next hitter to retire the side.
• BG broke on top in the fifth. Reagan Williamson singled with one out, and Sophie Weber reached on an infield error, with pinch-runner Peyton Dolejs taking seconds. Marvin got a popup for the second out, but Nikki Sorgi came through with a two-out single to center that plated Dolejs with what would prove to be the game's only run.
• Gottshall, as she had done in the third inning, struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth. Greta L'Esperance singled and stole second for the Falcons in the sixth, but was stranded there.
• In the bottom of the inning, Gottshall won batters with the first and last hitters, earning strikeouts both times. She got Taylor Breidt after a nine-pitch battle to begin the inning, and after Fisher singled and stole second with two outs, Gottshall struck out Oakes on a seven-pitch at-bat that included five foul balls.
• Makailah Dees won an epic battle with Marvin to begin the seventh. Dees fell behind 0-2 in the count, but after fouling off seven pitches, worked a walk after an 11-pitch plate appearance. A Maycee Godbolt single with two outs put runners at the corners, and Marvin hit Sorgi with a pitch to load the bases, but a grounder to third resulted in an inning-ending force play.
• In the bottom of the seventh, the Highlanders' Abby Wilson singled with two outs, but Gottshall responded with her 14th strikeout of the morning to close out the shutout and the win.
• Fisher had two of Radford's three hits, and was the only player on either team to reach base more than once.
• For the Falcons, L'Esperance had a single and a stolen base, while Godbolt and Williamson each had singles. Sammy and Makailah Dees each drew a walk in the win.
A FEW MORE FALCON NOTES
• Redshirt freshman Greta L'Esperance has hit safely in all nine games this season to date, and has an 11-game hitting streak dating to last season.
• L'Esperance also has stolen a base in four-straight games.
• She has 14 total hits, including three doubles, along with six stolen bases in 2021. L'Esperance leads the Falcons in all three categories, and has topped her totals (10 hits, one double, four steals) from last season.
• Freshman Peyton Dolejs scored the first run of her young career in Sunday's Radford game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will travel to Bowling Green, Ky., next weekend. BGSU will play two games each against Indiana State and the host school, Western Kentucky, in the Hilltopper Classic on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 27-28).
