LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opened the spring season this week by hosting the Mid-American Challenge at Royal Lakes Golf Course in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. The Falcons improved their team score in each round and finished the tournament with a ninth-place finish.
BGSU finished ahead of Western Illinois and MAC-rival Ohio. Northern Illinois won the event by posting a team score of 860. Florida Gulf Coast (863) finished in second while Illinois State (876) and Akron (876) tied for third.
Kayla Davis led the Falcons with a strong showing, shooting an even-par 72 in each of the final two rounds. Davis led BGSU with eight birdies and played very consistent all week. She opened the tournament with 10-straight pars before playing the back nine in the second round at two-under. Davis also played the front nine on Tuesday at two-under. Davis' 222 on the week establishes a new career low for a three-round tournament.
Nichole Cox played well in the season-opening event and placed 33rd. The senior improved each round, posting scores of 77, 75 and 74 over two days. Cox played the final nine holes of the tournament at even par, putting an exclamation point on her round with a birdie on 18.
Sammi Blackburn returned to action for the Falcons and opened the tournament with a round-one 76, which was Bowling Green's low score after 18 holes. Like Cox, Blackburn finished her tournament with a birdie at the par-five 18. Aly Kovach finished closely behind Blackburn, sticking to the theme of the tournament by posting improving rounds of 81, 78 and 76. Kelsey Sager (79) and Erin Korn (77) posted their best scores of the tournament today.
COACH YOUNG QUOTE
"We were honored to host the first event back in almost a year for a majority of teams in the tournament field. While we can definitely build momentum with the team's improvement from each round of the event, our finish shows that we sill have work to do. Kayla Davis led the way for us this week and the performance included her career low as a Falcon with two rounds of 72."
