Falcons face Ball State to open road portion of MAC schedule
• Bowling Green State University softball phenom Payton Gottshall is ranked among the national leaders in eight statistical categories. As of Thursday morning (March 25), Gottshall was tied for first in the country in strikeouts (165) and shutouts (six), and she was fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12.69).
• Gottshall's total of 165 strikeouts entering this weekend's series at Ball State already ranks seventh on the BGSU single-season list. She is just five K's away from moving into the top five, and needs 72 more strikeouts to tie the school record (237 by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel in 2005).
• Gottshall, a redshirt freshman, already is ninth on the BGSU career list with 293 strikeouts. Once she reaches the minimum number of innings to qualify for the school strikeouts-per-seven-innings lists, she will move directly to the top of both the season and career charts.
• Another redshirt freshman, Greta L'Esperance, leads the team with a .362 batting average this season, while senior Madi McCoy is hitting .356 with BG-best totals of 14 runs scored and 14 RBI. L'Esperance is 13-for-13 in stolen bases this spring.
• The Falcons lead Ball State, 52-43, in the all-time series. and BGSU captured two of the three games the last time the teams met. BG downed the Cardinals by scores of 4-1 and 5-4 in Muncie, before the hosts rallied for a 2-1, eight-inning victory in the final game of the weekend series (April 5-6, 2016).
