BGSU scores twice in the sixth for a 5-4, come-from-behind win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team scored a pair of sixth-inning runs to rally for a 5-4 win over the University of Akron on Friday afternoon (April 2). The game, the opener of a four-game weekend series, was held at Meserve Field.
The Falcons (11-13, 3-6 Mid-American Conference) scored the game's first three runs, but the Zips (3-16, 2-3 MAC) chipped away at the lead. Akron scored single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, then plated a pair of unearned runs to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth.
But, on an Akron error, Sarah Gonzalez came around to score, and Sammy Dees ripped a double down the left-field line to score Greta L'Esperance with the go-ahead run.
Hannah Davies got the final four outs, allowing just one baserunner en route to picking up the win in relief. She hit an Akron batter with a two-out pitch in the seventh, but got Tiffany Stevens to hit a soft liner back to the circle, plucking the ball out of midair for the final out.
Dees drove in a pair of runs in the win, while Madi McCoy reached base three times, with a double and a pair of walks.
NOTEWORTHY
• Hannah Davies picked up the win in relief on Friday, with one and a third innings of no-hit relief. It was the first victory of her BGSU career.
BGSU-AKRON – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons scored three runs over the game's first two innings. In the first, Sammy Dees was hit by an Olivia Otani pitch with one out, and Madi McCoy hit the very next pitch on a line to the base of the wall in right-center. Dees scored easily as McCoy's double gave the Falcons an early lead.
• Evelyn Loyola followed with a walk, and a Maycee Godbolt single loaded the bases. A grounder to second resulted in a force play at home for the second out, but Nikki Sorgi singled to right, plating pinch-runner Sophie Bosket.
• In the second inning, Payton Hamm reached on an outfield error, took third on a Greta L'Esperance grounder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dees.
• BG threatened in the third, as Godbolt walked, and pinch-runer Peyton Dolejs got as far as third base on a steal and a fly ball to the outfield, but the Zips got out of the inning unscathed.
• Meanwhile, Falcon starter Sydney Stepp worked three scoreless innings to begin the game. She worked her way out of a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the second inning, after a walk and an error. After a pair of force plays, another error loaded the bases, but Stepp struck out Molly McChesney to end the inning.
• Stepp worked a one-two-three third inning, aided by a nice diving grab by Sarah Gonzalez at third base. It was one of several sparkling plays Gonzalez would make on the afternoon.
• In the fourth, however, Macky Mitchiner led off with a double, and a one-out hit by Tiffany Stevens put runners at the corners. Samantha Malik's grounder to the left side resulted in an out, but also brought home a run for the Zips.
• UA reliever Lexie Petrof worked a scoreless fourth inning, and the visitors got a run closer in the fifth. McChesney singled, but Stepp retired the next two batters. But, a pair of errors conspired to allow McChesney to cross the plate and make it a 3-2 game before – with two runners in scoring position – Stepp struck out Anna Aquino to end the inning.
• BG threatened but did not score in the bottom of the fifth, and UA took the lead in the sixth. With one out, pinch-hitter Lauren Holdsworth reached on an error, and Jaiden Bryant singled. A pair of wild pitches moved the runners along, with the second scoring a run, and Sydney Jascoe's grounder to the right side allowed UA to take the lead. Hannah Davies entered the circle and got Madison Dudek to hit an inning-ending popup to Gonzalez at third.
• And, in the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons rallied. Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk, and took second on Hamm's sacrifice bunt. A L'Esperance grounder caromed off the UA third baseman and into the outfield, with Gonzalez scoring on the play and L'Esperance beating the throw to second. Then, Dees blistered a ball down the left-field line for a double, with L'Esperance coming around to score what would prove to be the game-winning run.
• In the seventh, Davies struck out Laurel DeVoe on the ninth pitch of the at-bat, then got Mitchiner to fly out to Sorgi in left. She hit pinch-hitter Atlantis Taufa with a pitch, but then grabbed a soft liner by Stevens to close out the win.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• Madi McCoy had a double in Friday's win to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. She reached base three times in the win, with a pair of walks.
• Sammy Dees had a double, a sac fly and two RBI, while Maycee Godbolt and Nikki Sorgi each had hits as well. Evelyn Loyola walked twice.
• Molly McChesney had two of the Zips' five hits in the game, stealing a pair of bases as well.
