April 20, 2021 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Samari Curtis, the 2019 Mr. Basketball Award winner in the state of Ohio in 2019, has joined the Bowling Green State University men's basketball program. Curtis is transferring to BGSU from the University of Evansville. The native of Xenia, Ohio averaged 10.1 points per game for the Purple Aces during the 2020-21 season.
Curtis, a four-star recruit by ESPN coming out of high school, began his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska, where he played in eight games for the Huskers as a freshman. The 6-foot-4 guard has multiple years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm thrilled to add Samari Curtis to our roster," said BGSU head coach Michael Huger. "Samari is a highly-regarded local player who will bring an array of talent to the basketball court. His combined ability to dribble, pass and shoot, as well as create shots for himself and his teammates, instantly makes him a valuable addition. Adding a player of Samari's caliber gives us a great person to grow within our system for the next few years. There is no doubt he will give Falcon fans something to cheer about while representing the Orange and Brown."
Curtis scored in double figures in eight of his 17 appearances at Evansville this past season. The 6-foot-4 guard poured in 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Southern Illinois on Dec. 28. He dropped 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting versus Valparaiso Jan. 31. Curtis, who shot 45.6 percent from the field in 2020-21, scored 10-plus points in his final three games at UE. An efficient three-point shooter, Curtis shot 38.0 percent (27-of-71) from downtown on the season, converting on at least one triple in 13-of-17 contests.
One of the most prolific scoring guards in Ohio High School history, Curtis averaged 33.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game at Xenia High School as a senior in 2019. He shot 51 percent from the floor as a senior. Curtis registered nine 40-point efforts in 2019, including a 52-point performance, and had three double-doubles, including a triple-double with 28 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. He finished his career at Xenia with a school-record 2,109 points, breaking the previous mark by nearly 500 points.
