Katie Cox Earns Top Drawer Soccer Weekly Honors
April 20, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Sophomore's second-half strike proved to be GWG in MAC Championship
Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Katie Cox has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. The announcement was made Tuesday morning (April 20). Cox earns the honor for the first time in her career.
Cox, a native of Granville, Ohio (Granville), scored the winning goal as the Falcons defeated Ball State, 2-1, in the Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday night (April 17) at Cochrane Stadium. Cox scored in the 62nd minute of the match from approximately 30 yards out. Her initial pass was blocked by a BSU defender, and the ball came back to her. Cox took a touch, then fired a shot from distance into the upper-right-hand corner of the net for a golazo that broke a 1-1 tie.
For Cox, it was her third goal of the season, and she has now scored the GWG in each of BGSU's last three games. Cox has scored five career goals, and four have been winners, including in each of BG's last two conference postseason wins.
The Falcons (6-1-0, 5-1-0 MAC) have won the MAC Championship for the third consecutive season. BGSU now prepares to face Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Championships, next Tuesday (April 27) at 6:00 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
