April 28, 2021 | Softball
Falcons, Rockets Split Wednesday DH at Meserve
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Madi McCoy homered twice and the Bowling Green State University softball team held off a late comeback attempt by the University of Toledo, as the Falcons downed the Rockets by a 5-4 count on Wednesday afternoon (April 28) at Meserve Field.
Sammy Dees also homered in the opening game of the Mid-American Conference doubleheader, as four of the Falcons' five runs scored via the long ball.
The Falcons (20-22, 12-15 MAC) got a complete-game effort from Payton Gottshall, who allowed just five hits in her seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Rockets (20-17, 10-11 MAC) bounced back with a 2-1 win.
McCoy and Greta L'Esperance each had three hits in the twinbill.

NOTEWORTHY
• Madi McCoy became the first Falcon to homer twice in the same game since ... Madi McCoy. She went deep twice in a win over Cleveland State on April 30, 2019.
• McCoy is only the fourth player in program to have more than one multiple-homer game. Hayley Wiemer had four such contests, while Gina Rango and Paige Berger had three apiece.
BGSU-UT GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons broke on top in the first inning, when Madi McCoy homered with two outs in the first. Nikki Sorgi followed with a double, but UT starter Makenna Durieux got a grounder to third to end the inning.
• The Rockets responded immediately, as Jenna Kroll tripled to lead off the second inning, and pinch-runner Sydney McKeever scored on a sacrifice fly by Raquel Emery.
• In the Falcon third, McCoy homered for the second-straight at-bat to give BGSU the lead. Her first-inning homer was a blast to dead center, while her third-inning dinger was hit to right. The latter bomb gave the Falcons the lead for good.
• The Falcons then scored three times in the fourth. Sarah Gonzalez led off with a single, and Payton Hamm bunted her to second. Gonzalez took third on Marlie McNulty's grounder, then scored on an infield hit by Greta L'Esperance. Then, Sammy Dees followed with a two-run homer that gave the Brown and Orange a 5-1 lead.
• The Rockets put two runners aboard with one out in the fifth, but BG starter Payton Gottshall got a double-play grounder to end the inning, and she then set down the visitors in order in the sixth.
• In the seventh, though, UT made a comeback bid that fell just short. Lexi Eckman reached on a bunt single with one out, and Aleah Marra's two-out walk was followed by a Dayna Denner three-run homer. Suddenly, the Rockets trailed by just one run, but Gottshall responded by striking out Riley Mohr to end the game.
BGSU-UT GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• UT scored a first-inning run against Hannah Davies. Anna Dixson led offo the game with a walk, and Denner doubled with one down. Macey Moore's two-out walk loaded the bases, and Kroll also drew a walk to drive in a run before Davies got an inning-ending grounder back to the circle.
• The Rockets doubled the lead in the third. Denner singled through the right side, and Mohr followed with a base hit. A sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position, and Kroll's fielder's-choice grounder drove in a run as pinch-runner Lily Beyer beat the throw to the plate. With runners at the corners and just one out, Davies got out of the inning without further damage.
• Sydney Stepp relieved Davies to begin the fourth inning, and allowed one hit – but no runs – in each of the remaining four innings.
• Meanwhile, though, UT starter Erin Hunt kept the Falcons off of the scoreboard through six innings. She hit Sammy Dees with a pitch in the first inning, and walked Sophie Weber in the second and McNulty in the third, but did not surrender a hit until Peyton Dolejs drove a ball back up the middle with one out in the fourth.
• Nikki Sorgi singled to begin the Falcon fifth, and both Weber (on a UT error) and Logan Everett (hit by a pitch) also reached base that inning. But, a double-play ball killed the Falcons' momentum, and a Gonzalez liner was caught by Denner at third base to end the threat.
• In the seventh, however, L'Esperance drove a ball over the right fielder's head for a one-out triple, then scored on a Sammy Dees grounder. With two outs, McCoy singled up the middle, and a walk to Sorgi sent pinch-runner Sophie Bosket to second. But, Weber's line drive was caught by leaping second baseman McKeever to end the game and allow the Rockets to salvage a split of the day's DH.
