Spring 2021 Breakdown: Wide Receivers
April 09, 2021 | Football
Throughout the spring, BGSUFalcons.com will breakdown each position for the 2021 BGSU football program. Today, we take a look at the wide receivers..
Â
Part 1 -Â Tight Ends
Part 2 -Â Offensive Line
Part 3 -Â Quarterbacks
Part 4 - Running Backs
Bowling Green, Ohio – Wide receivers have enjoyed as rich a tradition and history at Bowling Green State University as arguably any school in college football. Legendary names are scattered about the Falcons' record book at the position, and in the case of current BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Freddie Barnes, he stood alone in the NCAA record book as the all-time leading receiver in a single season for many years.
Â
Passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Erik Campbell is tasked with developing and shepherding in the newest members of the fraternity of wide receivers at BGSU. Nine of the 11 receivers projected to be on the fall roster have freshman eligibility.
Â
Campbell is entering his third season in his role for the Falcons, and has over 30 years of coaching experience. His experience continues to be key in the development of a very young and inexperienced group.
Â
He will rebuild his wide receiver core beginning with his only returner starter, third-year freshman Tyrone Broden. Broden possesses unique size at 6-feet-4, and was rated as a three-star recruit coming out of high school. Broden started all five games for the Falcons last season.
Â
Javonte Kinsey is entering his second-year freshman season after appearing in all five games for the Falcons in 2020. Kinsey caught a 26-yard touchdown against Ohio, is 6-5, weighs 205 pounds, and hails from Jacksonville, Fla.
Â
2020 should be considered a wash for the wide receivers. As a young offense focused on getting the ball out to the flats and into playmakers' hands, former running back Bryson Denley and former tight end Quintin Morris were featured in the passing game.
Â
With their massive size and potential, Kinsey and Broden have the opportunity to become a dominant deep-threat duo as well as a dangerous red zone tandem if the Falcons can continue to develop the passing attack. Kinsey was also a three-star recruit, and chose BGSU over offers from Cincinnati, UConn, Colorado State, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, and Southern Mississippi, among others.
Â
Jhalyin Embry, also from Jacksonville, Fla., is someone the Falcons looked to get the ball to in unique fashion last season. Embry handled jet sweeps and ran the ball successfully for the Falcons on a number of occasions. A freshman returning for his second season, Embry is 6-0 and weighs 180 pounds. Embry and Kinsey both attended Sandalwood High School as preps.
Â
Jake Rogers, at 5-9, 185 pounds, has been used primarily as the team's punt returner. The sophomore speedster could see ample playing time at the wide receiver position this season, as he has seen his playing time offensively increase on occasion over the past two seasons.
Â
Cavon Croom, at 6-0 and 190 pounds, is a redshirt junior who can add maturity and depth to the wide receiver room this spring and into the fall.
Â
Nick Niehoff, Ty Cook, Princeton Hoskins, Cole Lakatos, and Nic Kilbride are freshmen with varying amounts of experience within the program who will help build the depth this spring and into fall for the Falcons at the wide receiver position. One of these young student-athletes could very well become the next great wide receiver at Bowling Green.
Â
Jaylen Smith, also from Jacksonville, Fla., signed with the team in December and the Falcons looked to get him valuable reps this spring and potentially into fall. He stands 6-1 and weighs 183 pounds. Smith had offers from FIU and South Alabama, among others.
Â
Locally, Tae'Shaun Johnson, a 5-11, 195-pound wide receiver from Toledo Central Catholic also signed in December to compete in fall camp and to add depth at the position on gamedays. Johnson had offers from Army, Cincinnati and most of the Mid-American Conference.
