RedHawks Get Past Falcons on Senior Day
May 02, 2021 | Softball
BGSU closes out the home schedule on Tuesday vs. WMU
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Miami University jumped on top early on Sunday afternoon (May 2), and the league-leading RedHawks went on to a 9-0 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team at Meserve Field.
Miami (36-8, 26-2 Mid-American Conference) scored seven times in the first inning to seize control, then added single tallies in the second and fourth frames.
For the Falcons (21-25, 13-18 MAC), Sunday was Senior Day, as the seniors in the program were recognized in ceremonies prior to first pitch. Logan Everett, Madison French, Evelyn Loyola, Madi McCoy and Nikki Sorgi all were honored, and two members of the 2020 senior class, Taylor Blevins and Summer Callahan, were recognized as well.
Miami had not been held to one run or fewer in 24 MAC games entering the weekend, but BGSU's Payton Gottshall turned the trick on both Friday and Saturday, allowing just two total runs (one earned) in two complete-game efforts. But, on Sunday, the RedHawks were able to break on top early against Gottshall to take the lead for good.
BGSU-MIAMI – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The RedHawks primarily used 'small ball' to put together a big first inning. A walk and a hit batter put two runners aboard with one out, and Mackenzie Moore hit a line drive off of Gottshall. The BG pitcher recovered in time to grab the ball, but her toss toward third base was off line, allowing MU to score.
• A walk reloaded the bases, and back-to-back singles followed. Morgan Lott's two-run double gave the visitors a 5-0 lead and was the lone extra-base hit of the inning.
• Sydney Stepp entered the circle and after issuing a walk, struck out Karlie Spaid (Spaid's second strikeout of the inning). Aliie Cummins singled up the middle to plate another run before Steep whiffed Moore to end the inning.
• The visitors scored single runs in the second inning, when Riley Coyne doubled to score Holly Blaska, and in the fourth on a Jada Dotson homer.
• Peyton Dolejs, who made two spectacular catches in right field in Saturday's 2-1 win over MU, made a nifty catch of a line drive in the fifth inning and fired a strike to Nikki Sorgi to double a Miami runner off first base.
• Stepp allowed just two runs on five hits in her four-and-a-third-inning relief stint. She walked three batters and struck out six. Madison French got the final out of the fifth inning for the Falcons.
• Miami's Courtney Vierstra retired all 15 batters she faced to improve to 21-3 on the season. She threw 41 strikes among her 61 pitches.
• Coyne and Lott each went 2-for-3 for the RedHawks, who had nine total hits in the game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday (May 4), hosting Western Michigan in a doubleheader at Meserve Field. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
• Then, BGSU will head to DeKalb, Ill., for a four-game weekend (May 7-9) series vs. Northern Illinois, before traveling to Kalamazoo for a DH vs. WMU on Wednesday, May. 12.
